i'm taking my '01 in for inspection, it falls under the VIN for the buyback (frame rust recall). just curious what peoples' experieces have been with this.

2 stories:

* son bought a '98 Taco in Spring of '08 for $6000. Toyota announced the frame warranty change a couple weeks later, so we crawled under it to take a closer look. Found a huge hole rotted thru. Toyota bought the truck from him for $13,400.

* co-worker has an '02 Tacoma. Low miles, exceptional maintenance. He went to the trouble of hand-painting the entire undercarraige with Rustoleum Satin Black when the truck was brand new. Got the letter a few weeks ago so he took it in, yup they put a new frame under it. Had a few issues when he got it back, steering wheel was crooked, squeeky bushings, rear springs were uneven. Took it back, they fixed it all n/p.

So am I understanding this correctly that even without some obvious rust failures they may provide you with a new frame, or possibly just paint it if it is in good shape?

or they will buy your truck back from you for more than it is worth, and sell you a new one at a really good deal...

took the 01 to the dealer today. they did the inspection (about an hour). they did find a hole, but, the buyback is only up to 2000 models. period. over 2000 they will repair, or replace if bad enough. it is not the dealers decision. there is no buyback on trucks over the 2000 year model. only replace/repair. the dealership takes pictures and sends them to toyota, who then makes the decision to repair or replace.

got my truck back last friday. new frame, leaf springs, brake lines, i think hydraulic lines for the clutch, lower control arms and front end alignment. rides like almost new. very nice. no problems what so ever.

glad to hear of your positive experience!
BTW do you have to recieve a letter or just take your truck in for them to evaluate since mine is an '01 and I can't check the VIN #?

i just called the dealership, gave them the VIN and they checked it for me. i bought mine from an idividual and have done all the service myself or had it done at a local shop, so i was not getting any mailouts from a dealership.
