Hey folks,
just wanted to share a little about my cruiser and get any feedback and ideas on what can be impoved upon.
I'm from Delta, Bc and found a haggard, worn out 1982 BJ60 on craigslist for $2000. On my 20th birthday I had it towed from Burnaby and it was deposited outside my house. I had never changed the oil in a car and now I had a landcruiser that didn't run. There was something with the head gasket. I never really did find out. When I pulled the head I found the precups cracked and in my ignorance figured my head was cracked. I got on the phone and found a newer 3B for $800 from a guy out in South Langley. Can't remember his name, good cruiser mechanic though.
I basically just learnt as I went and spent about 8 months getting the thing running solid on diesel and vegetable oil. Now I find myself with a pretty solid 1982 BJ60 4-speed landcruiser converted to run on waste vegetable oil. It has an interior storage system I made out of wood with storage for surfboards, food, equipment, extra vegetable oil... I spent the last 5 months figuring out a solid system of how to live out it and now I am heading into mexico! Just wanted to share my expedition rig.
It came with an old warn winch which I have tested out and seems to be pretty solid. I built a rear bumper for the thing with a swing out arm which holds a spare tire and 2 sceptor military jerry cans full of vege oil. I installed OME's Heavy-Heavy suspension and built a huge storage box that sits on the roof. It carries surfboards, vegetable oil, spare water, and other camping equipment. Yes, it's a little top heavy. We have 31"x10.5x15" tires in the front and 32x12.5x15" in the rear. 2 31" spare tires.
Anyways, that is kinda the jist of it. I outfitted the truck with an onboard vegetable oil filter with dieselcraft's OC-20 centrifuge. It is run with a 1/3HP pump and heater element and hooks up to my bumper. With this I have been able to drive from Tofino BC to San Diego CA and all in between for the past 5 months surfing and camping. I'll try and get some pics of the rig specifically to share with you all tomorrow. DSC_0303.webp

Cool setup. Can you explain the storage contraption on top of your roof a little more?

we were tired of strapping everything down to the roof racks, and wanting some additional storage space up there. also, having 5 surfboards sitting on the roof at all times is asking to be robbed. so we built this box at the same time as the OME install. 1 side is about a foot longer than the other to make room for the surfboards. Its all made of wood, bolts, and hinges and is freaking heavy. 4 20 liter jerry cans of fuel sit on the other side as well as skateboards, a tent, tire chains, fishing rods, and climbing rope. I drilled ready-rod through the roof into the box and fastened it with washers and bolts in 8 places. It has been up there now for about 3 months and has travelled about 700 miles. It's holding up well so far. better than i expected anyways. on either side the entire side panel flips up and onto the roof for access and is fastened shut with 2 locks on each side.
the rear bumper was built using the Ironpig spindle. works great. hold another 40 liters of wvo and a spare.

We have 31"x10.5x15" tires in the front and 32x12.5x15" in the rear.

You're asking for trouble here! On a 4x4 ALL tires should be the same size and ideally same brand and amount of wear. Different sized tires are going to cause driveline binding and possible breakage. Why tempt fate?
