Exiled, been reading your posts and I wanted to pick you brain for some info. I have been keen on the idea of a diesel for a while, but am having trouble locating a decent affordable BJ60 and the thought of importing doesn't have me to thrilled. Also, to have a 13B-T/h55 setup installed into a FJ60 would be very expensive. So, when I read your posts about the cummins install, it had me intersted.
I read that you had a BJ60 before you got the cummins conversion. How did you like it compared to your current setup? I know you mentioned the problem of getting parts for the BJ60. Was it that much of a pain?
One thing that I question with the cummins install was the need for 4" of lift. Do you need to go that high?
Finally, do you have a ballpark about how much the engine/tranny with install. I'm sure I'll think of more questions, and I now this was addressed to Exiled, but any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

I don't think Henry ever had a BJ 60. Not that I knew about anyway. He has a Venezuelan spec'd 62 series that has a carbed 3f with a 5 speed from factory. He hasn't gotten his truck back yet. It is still in the works at Proffit's. I saw it and it is looking awesome. I'm doing that to mine this winter. I can't wait. You have to have the 4 inch lift to clear the oil pan. His was sprung over by Mudrak years ago. he was actually one of the first pioneers in the SOA 60's. Don't worry he'll answer your questions. He is very knowledgable. Cool guy for a Venezuelan too. To boot.

Sorry, I haven't had much time to check the boards lately.

I made the decision to go with a Cummins 4BT instead of a Toyota diesel for various reasons:

1. Initial investment. The 4BT was 1/4 the price of a Toyota diesel with a factory turbo. I love Toyota engines, but because I was farming out the conversion, I just couldn't afford to pay a huge chunk of cash for the drivetrain and then another good chunk of cash for the installation.

2. Parts. I've been driving a non-US FJ62 in the US for the better part of ten years, and parts availability has been a hassle. YES, you can source pretty much everything OEM you need through various sources, but it's not cheap and oftentimes you have to wait. For a daily driver, this is tough, and the ease of availability and price of Cummins parts weighed heavily in the decision.

3. Experience. Several Cruiserheads I know had pioneered this conversion and Proffitts Cruisers in Delta, CO has already done several Land Cruisers, so my Cruiser wouldn't be the guinea pig.

I never owned a BJ60, not sure where that came from.

The 4" lift (Mine has about 6" from the SOA conversion) is needed to get enough clearance for the oil pan above the front axle. GreaseCruiser on this board had a SUA setup, I think, you might want to PM him for more info. Incidentally, he had a BJ60 for sale the last time I heard.

4. Ease of conversion. The 4BT is available with a GM bolt pattern, which meant I could use the AA adapter to mate it to the H55F already in my Cruiser. That reduced the expense of ancillaries, which can sometimes drive the cost of conversions way past the original estimate.

Exiled,

I actually tried to pm you but for some reason I was blocked. Thanks for the input. You are right it wasn't a BJ60, but a non-US fj62. Since mine will be a daily driver, the initial price and availability of parts is a great concern. But, I also hesitate in putting a non-Toyota engine in a LC. I'll comb the boards for some more info. One more question, how is the noise/vibration?

Henry,

I was going to PM you to see if you have taken delivery yet... it doesn't sound like you have at this point.

I'm still anxious for the road test!!

Chuck

How much space do you have in front of your motor? Would another 2 cylinders fit?

4BT cummins fits very well in the engine room in a TLC. The issue with the 4BT is the height of the engine, cos, oil pan are really big.
