Hey there,

I am pretty new to cars, but I recently bought an 1989 Toyota HJ75 Troop Carrier.
And I really would like to invest some "love" into it ;)
The preowner were total idiots just chewing down kms without doing anything to it.

My worst problem is the exhaust smell, while driving. I guess it comes through the window, only smell it when it is open.

I checked the exhaust pipes, but couldnt find anything.

Could it be caused by anything else? Oil burning of some hot parts, etc?

Any hints what to check?

Another thing: the electrics, is there anywhere a cable layout to get? There appears to be some custom wiring I cant quite figure out.

Thanks in advance, Dennis.

Welcome to the forum! and congrats on your new ride. My Cruiser has the same problem, exhuast smell in cab. I narrowed mine down to my exhaust manifold/gasket. Pop the hood and play with the throttle cable and see if it puffs smoke out the exhaust side of the engine.

Thanks for the hint, I will check it out.

What did you do to fix it? Just replace the gasket? Is it hard/expensive to do?

There is also a cabin fresh air intake line off the air filter (at least on my HJ61) and it can get unseated easily. Happened to me and I got sick from the fumes coming in! slept for two days before I could go and open the hood to look!

Whoa, I didn't even see this reply until now. The gasket cost $35 dollars. I had to disconnect the exhuast, air cleaner assembly and exhuast manifold. Turned out I had two broken studs and my gasket was burnt to nothing. Along with the cost of a very hard to find tap to re-thread the holes, and new studs, and paying 4 wheel to drill out my busted studs, it was about $250. If all it is is a gasket, and you have the tools and don't have to do any drilling, it should only cost about $40.
