Was at a stoplight and when I went to take off my exhaust started booming, just like that, no other indication that there was something wrong...

My exhaust was replaced two years ago from the cats on back. Right now it sounds like a Chevy truck with a rumbly exhaust.... Gets louder as RPMs increase. Need new cats? A new manifold? Gasket?

Our original plan was to go to the Toyota dealership after we finish visiting my stepdad who's in the hospital and look at a new Rav4 for my mom, but now I'm going to see if they can at least diagnose what's wrong while she's out looking at cars.

Sending this from my cell phone so I may be slow to respond.

Thanks a lot.

Sounds like a broken weld. This happened on my old 1990 Bonneville, the weld at the rear of the cat broke, allowing it to hang down. Made that Gen 1 3800 sound like a 350 w/ glasspacks at idle...and a giant moving fart as soon as you stepped on the gas.

I'd climb underneath and see if something popped loose.

Is that a relatively easy fix? Could the dealership fix this in a short amount of time? Doesnt have to be permanent but just enough to get home (40 miles).

Well, it depends on whether or not it actually is just a broken weld, or if something poked a hole in your muffler or some other problem. A broken weld is easy and cheap though, if that's what it is. 10 minutes of actual work, less than $40 to fix probably. I wouldn't go to a dealership though, go to a muffler shop. They will get you in faster and be alot cheaper.

Think i found the problem... My O2 sensor popp ep out, the thing it screws into was so rusted that when I had them replaced two weeks ago, I guess my mechanic didnt see that the plate was rusted out. Hopefully the dealership can fix it when we get there.

Yeah, you'll need a new 02 bung. Not a huge deal as long as the pipe can be patched.

At Lia Toyota in Colonie waiting to hear the news... The service manager says I may need a new pipe but I dunno, this is a stealership like every other one so it may be a simple fix which they wouldnt be willing to do.

Test drove the new 4Runner for the hell of it... nice vehicle but not a Land Cruiser!

Everything's all set! Got it fixed without having to replace the cat.

From the tech report:

"Will try to clean. Retap three sets of mounting threads. Install new mounting hardware and refit O2 sensor. New cat converter needed otherwise."
Parts ($16.54):

Oxygen sensor gasket
Nut

Total with tax: $124.25.

Just glad it didnt cost me a new cat otherwise I'd have been out somewhat more money...

Customer service was better than I thought it'd be seeing how I didn't hear good things about this dealership chain. Mechanic was courteous and so was the service manager who got me an early appointment.

Anyway, thanks for the input. Gotta love this forum and gotta love our Land Cruisers!

Good to hear about the positive outcome. $125 for that isn't terrible, mostly labor costs as usual.

I just got done replacing my 02s, and I'm happy to say that everything is in fantastic condition down there considering my truck came from Chicago.

Every fall I scrape the rust off and prime and paint my undersides... Cheap insurance!
