Hi everyone, not new to the forum, but it's been awhile as I've had no cruiser to work on. I know, so sad. But, I'm the new owner of an 81fj40, which is in good shape for the most part.

I do have some questions. The engine is all stock, carb needs a rebuild and some exhaust is escaping somewhere before the cat.

I want to have the carb rebuilt (how do I get a hold of Jim C.?)

put in headers and desmog it, any recommendations on how best to proceed? I've been reading and searching religiously on the mud site, but wanted to see if this is all viable.

Also was curious if anyone had any experience with the OME Dakar springs? or if there are other recommendations outside of OME, 2-2.5" inch lift preferred.

Thanks!

My 2 cents: Leave it original. Any benefits are so small that they aren't worth the expense and effort. It will be worth more and be easier to sell if you leave it.

I'm a little concerned the exhaust manifold may be cracked. Haven't check yet though. Other weak spots? It may just need a new gaskets all around. intake is good, no vacuum leaks.

how do I get a hold of Jim C. for a carb rebuild? or is there anyone in the puget sound/seattle area that does rebuilds?

congrats! I'm looking for one also. Let's see some pics! :steer:

I'll get some pics up soon. It's good to have a 40 again, the wife is already complaining about the time spent in the garage!

The exhaust manifold is not cracked. the 1981 manifold is already broken in 3 pieces by design, so no more issues w/ cracking or excessive warpage.

The intake, OTOH, can be cracked on the bottom and warped to h@ll from the exhaust heat blasting it.

The old gasket is the weak point. Pull off the manifolds, clean them up, make sure heat riser is working (or discard if broken), and replace w/ new graphlex gasket from Fel-Pro or RemFlex.
