Nice read and perspective. However, I wish it would have been published after I buy my 200. I don't need the prices driven up any higher :)

I'd like to think I had that type of influence with my rambling. I think the updates in the 2016 should drive prices down a bit on the older rigs

I certainly hope so :)

Selling the 80 after all of the experiences you probably had (ie the Pan-American) must have been a difficult decision. I know I get emotionally attached to vehicles that have played an important, supporting, role in an experience in my life.

Thanks for the great article btw

It was hard but I'd reached the point with it that all I was doing was maintenance and no more mods. I love building trucks almost as much as I like using them. I needed something new to get me excited about Land Cruisers again. I may have she a tear or two. It was my home for a very significant part of my life. Hard to let that go.

thanks sir.

Fantastic article. Thank you!

Nice. I want the 200 even more now.

I love that he truly took his Cruisers to the ends of the Earth...
If anyone wants a truly spectacular overlanding experience...do the pipeline road he referred to all the way to the Arctic Ocean in Prudho Bay, Alaska. You catch the "Haul Road" just above Fairbanks and it winds through the incredible Brooks Range. I've done it twice, and plan to go again. Never gets old... Bear, caribou, all sheep, amazing birds, fox and the occasional wolf. No scary wheeling--unless you seek it out...although you should take extra fuel, and 4WD if it gets muddy. Also... If you tent camp? Need bear protection. We had two 44 magnums, and it's perfectly legal to open-carry up there. Fun stuff!

Agreed. I did it back in 2002 in my Tacoma and didn't really plan to do it this summer until my friend who works on the slope wanted to drive home with me. I was so glad I did it again. They've paved huge chunks of the road since the first time I did it but it doesn't matter, the clarity of the air, the Brooks range, the expansive tundra, the hundreds of miles of nothingness make it worth doing over and over again.

On the flip-side...
Land Rover Defender is now OFFICIALLY DEAD... See article here:

Named, "Death of an Icon"

It's interesting to learn that their "boxy" design was really due to a lack of steel and tools...rather than some aversion to curves...

It is the Defender that is dead, not the Discovery (aka LR4). The Defender can't meet modern crash testing requirements, which is why it hasn't been available in the US forever.
