Saw this today on Vancouver Island (BC Canada). Belong to anyone here? Definitely a sweet rig. Had Alberta plates on the back.

So this is an HZJ79 right? This one has front coils and 5 lug hubs. What year did that start? Any idea what year this thing is?

Probably an ex-mine truck.

With the European plate I thought maybe someone brought it over from Europe for a trip in Canada.

If it was a mine truck they sure did a nice job restoring it, as it is in really good shape.

Yes, the D is for Germany. Based on the camper being built in Germany it seems probable that it's a European import. I wonder how they managed to register it in Alberta?

It’s a German HZJ79 registered in the southwestern city of Reutlingen (RT). It’s definitively not a mining or restored truck. There are a few specialized dealers in Europe selling new series 7 trucks (USD 60.000 and up). The main problem is to get the legal registration due to emission regulations. The 78 and 79 will have the HZJ engine while the 76 and 71 are also sold with the 4.0 V6 gasoline engine.

Looks like a long distance traveler doing the Americas or maybe somebody who moved to Canada and took his car. Many countries allow bringing your cars, if you own it for more than 12 month before moving. Not sure if this applies for Canada. I’ve done it twice with my FJ40, which has been registered in Venezuela, Germany and now in Switzerland.
Cheers from rainy Switzerland

Did the fuel filler neck stay on the right side regardless of steering wheel location on all models?

Good info Tomas; thanks!! :)

I think I may have seen the owners briefly as I left the parking lot in my LJ78. They were staring at my truck quite a bit with obvious curiosity/interest in it.
