Not a lot about ethanol on this part of the forum or CNG.
Going to do a ethanol/CNG conversion on a 2F engine in a FJ60. Decided to use ethanol cause i can make it my self after i get my perment from the ATF, and i picked CNG/Propane cause it has the same octane rating as the ethanol which is 110 octane.
The only bad thing with them both is they have less BTU's per gallon. If i remember right:
Gasoline=114,000 Gal
Diesel= 129.000
Bio diesel=118,300
Ethanol= 76,100
CNG= 115,000
I know bio diesel has a greater amount of potential energy than ethanol and CNG, but the bad thing about bio diesel is that you are left up to the whims of restaurants and other establishments. Was gonna make bio diesel but the restaurants fell through and now i am gonna sell my 3b diesel fj60 and get a gas one.
I know i will lose some MPG's by doing this but the up side of it is i get to make my fuel for $1.39/gal and CNG is also pretty cheap.
I am gonna try to get back some of my lost MPG's by doing some mods to my new truck.
Some of the things i am going to do to achieve that are:
Reduce weight.
Going to achieve this by replacing my front fenders and hood with carbon fiber panels. I am gonna try to make my own carbon fiber panels and other various pieces to help lighten up the truck. Cause faces it FJ60 is nothing but a giant brick with wheels.
Also thinking about shaving some metal off of the body and other parts.
Improving Electrical
Going to switch over all of my dash panel lights, running lights, inside lights, and also if i can find some sealed beam headlights. Doing this cause LED's use less power and are also brighter than conventional lights. Less power used mean less drain on the battery so the alternator has to kick on less.
Adding a high out put alternator so when it is on it should charge up the battery faster which should reduce stress on the engine.
Add second battery going to use 2 optima red tops. Dont know if it would help but its really nice to have 2.
Reducing Engine load
Going to add a electric power steering pump from a MR2 or any thing else that might work for my steering needs. Also going to add a switch to shut it off do not need to run i all of the time like when you are on the high way or any long straight stretch of road. might have a second one to run a hydraulic winch.
More than likely toss the AC. My truck right now does not have it and i am fine with it.
Put in a electric radiator fan which in my diesel helped out.
Engine mods
One way to get back some of the MPG's lost from ethanol is to raise the compression of the engine. Need to figure out how much i can raise it. Going to have to shave down the heads just make sure i do not lower it so much that the piston strikes the valves.
Add DUI HEI ignition system. With this i can get a hotter better spark so i can lean out fuel mix.
Run Mobil One energy conservation oil. Is supposed to increase MPG by i think 2-8%.
Trans drive train
Adding a 5 speed will help but not cheap maybe later.
Need to look in to changing my diff i think they came stock with 4.11 see about getting one that will proved pretty good off road use and also help with gas mileage.
Thats all i can think of right now. More to come as i go. I welcome any comments or ideas.
