Anyone have advise on installing the engine /tranny as a unit in a 1981 40? I removed them individually and would like to put em back in as a unit....Thanks

Every time I have pulled the motor in my 76 (SBC and 250 I-6) I have taken the front bib off, pulled the starter and accessories off the motor, (it may be easier without the manifolds) adn picked up the drivetrain so the tranny/transfer hangs at about a 45 degree angle. Be sure to take into account the weight of the 2F if that is what your installing. You will have to lift it up a ways to clear the front cross member so be very careful. I endeed up using a combination of rolling the chassis forward and backward as necessary so I did not have to shift the weight on the lift. I set the transfer on a floor jack with wheels so I could let the transfer roll back under the truck as the engine is lowered. You will likely have to remove the shifters too. If the truck isn't lifted it might be tight fitting it under the chassis.

If you dropped it wthout pulling the motor - you can rig a hoist system using a couple of Sawhorses / Laddres / etc. across the body. Take the doors off.

I went to Harbor Freight and bought a $25 boat winch, and mounted it to a spare bumper I had for hoisting. I bet you could use a couple of 5 gallon plastic buckets for support - if your floorpans are good.

You probably want a floor jack under the back of the TC for alignment.

You need a couple of long bolts for guidepins, and to snug the Tranny in. If you search, there are some threads on this.

Good Luck

I found it best to install the engine and tranny assembled / together as a unit.
The transmission support crossmember should be removed from frame.
The transmission shifter and transfer case shifter should be removed.
Remove the engine motor mounts.
Use a short lift chain with ends secured to both engine lift points.
I say short because if it's too long the the firewall might get beat up.
With bib removed, jockey the goods into place using an overhead crane with a hook connected to above chain that allows angling the load.
You need a pretty steep angle, tilting down towards the transmission to get everything roughly in place.

Bolt the transmission crossmember support to the transmission and then raise it and connect / bolt it to the frame with the fan end of the engine suspended.
Raise the fan end of the engine enough to install the motor mounts.
Lower the engine onto the motor mounts.

Enjoy the day!

I just pulled the engine tranny at the same time in my 40 - we just used a small John Deere tractor and it came right out (after mangling the oil filter I forgot to remove :()
