I have a gx470 2007. It has had all of its scheduled oil changes and had its timing belt replaces about 1500 miles ago. It ran fine before and after the timing belt change. It has an engine tick on the passenger side of the engine. I have tried moly lifter oil, sea foam, engine flush, and oil changes thinking is was a stuck lifter. Unfortunately nothing has worked. I thought is was the exhaust manifold but it is not.

I finally brought it in and the shop said it would cost 3,500 to remedy the valve spring failure. This includes parts and labor for - pressure testing, inspecting the head, replacing valve stem seals, head gasket, machining and valve grinding, exhaust gasket, plenum gasket, valve stem seals, new coolant, valve cover gasket, spark plug tube seals, pcv valve, and new oil/filter.

Anyone else have this problem. Does this sound right? If i go ahead and do this work is there anything else i should consider?
Thanks

I’ve never seen an broken valve spring on a 2uz. Have had the valve buckets stick causing a ticking noise. A flush can help with that if the buckets aren’t too scored.
Can you share a video of the noise?

Yeah sure I will post a video in a few hours when I get home. It runs great it just has a harsh tick

How exactly did they diagnose it as having a failed valve spring? I'd be curios on if there are any marks from them removing the valve cover to actually check. It seems that the camshaft and buckets woudl also need to be removed to even see the valve spring (but I haven't taken a 2UZ-FE cylinder ahead apart myself).

Assuming the valve spring failure is the proper diagnosis, It also seems that they are planning on removing the head to replace the valve spring. While I've never done a valve spring on a 2UZ FE, I have done them on a SOCH Subaru. It might be possible to just replace the valve spring without removing the entire head and sending it off for machining. It's certainly worth looking into, or at leas asking them why they think removal of the entire head is necessary.

Also....ticking on a 2UZ-FE is usually a cracked exhaust manifold. And, it's certainly odd that you'd get a valve spring failure within 1,500 miles of a timing belt job. Did you do the job - or someone a shop? It makes me wonder if something was put back incorrectly during the T-belt job and either 1) it's making a ticking noise the shop mis-diagnosed as a valve spring failure or 2) the cam timing was not set properly and something was damaged.

I did the timing belt and I tripped checked it according to the factory service manual. I also took pictures of both cams and main shaft before putting together.

I first when to meineke and had them check the exhaust. They said it was internal.

When I brought it to the shop I don't think they took anything apart. I think they just started it up (I left it with them at night, drop box, and they called me first thing the next morning).

I think they said it was valve lashing. A sprinkler or shim out of spec

I'd get a 2nd opinion on it. Seems like a big diagnosis if they haven't even pulled off a valve cover.
