Hi, I just picked up this 2020 Heritage Edition, 71k miles gold certified. I have never owned the 200 series before (i had a 100 and an 80) Does the sound seem normal? To me seems a little loud.

Videos often don't do a great job of conveying how something sounds in real life. That said, I didn't hear anything that sounded particularly unusual. Is there any specific aspect of the sound or location of the sound that seems the most concerning to you?

Sounds normal for a Toyota 5.7 to me. Search for 5.7 tundra engine sounds.. way more of those on the road and as a result, way more online discussion about their quirks. Exact same engine.

Edit: switching the oil to 5w-30 will noticeably quiet down the valve train, even if no harm is being done with the likely current 0w-20, technically.

Thats the first thing i did when I got the truck… switch to 5w-30.

The diesel like sound. Maybe its normal…

Hard to tell. The 5.7L is a mechanically louder engine than the 4.7L in the 100-series which sounds turbine smooth by comparison.

Seems normal, especially since going underneath like you did amplifies noises as they bounce off the floor. Know anything about those first 71K miles?

Carfax shows regular oil changes at dealer. Truck has gold warranty from toyota (i bought it from toyota dealership)

Mine makes this noise as well, ‘21 HE. I’ll often go a week or more in between drives and I’ll hear that noise and have a moment of panic (a lifetime of driving sh*tboxes really leaves a mark) and realize I’m in the Cruiser and not my daily. We recently welcomed a 2021 LX into the garage and it also sounds like this.

You’re good to go.

I had a 100 before thats what I'm comparing it to

A lot of it is due to use of a timing chain in the 5.7. versus timing belt in the 4.7.

Sounds normal to me. The 5.7 is running like a Swiss watch, albeit a little “clackity”, but that’s how these engines sound when they’re running.

As Teckis mentioned, it’s just the timing chain clatter, compared to a rubber belt that a 4.7 uses… the benefit being we don’t need to change the chain, but it does cause a little extra clatter.

About running the 5w-30, I live in LA and sometimes go up into the mountains in the snow…. Do you guys switch back to 0w20 for the cold weather or the 5w-30 is ok for the cold?

As a whole, 5w-30 doesn’t start to lose its “flowing” properties until around -22F, but some higher quality oils can run down to -31F.

You’re fine running 5w-30 if you don’t experience temps that low.

I can attest that at -10F, the engine starts up and runs just fine at those temps, and I run 5W-30 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum year round.

This is what I'm running (5k mile interval)
