I am in the middle of rebuilding the 2F on my 83 FJ60. I've got it on an engine stand and have stripped it down to bare block. Today, while washing the block and rotating it, I heard a piece fall to the ground. Below is a picture. This looks very much like the cylinder head guide that is in the left front bolt hole on the block (but mine is still in place). Is there supposed to be another one at the left rear of the block?

There is also a very similar looking piece on the bolt hole for the 3rd main bearing.

Anyone know where this piece goes? Thanks,

Matt

Cam bearing?

hmmm

also looks like the crush sleeve on the end of the egr return pipe. could it have fallen out of the cooler if it did not come of with the pipe?

I think it's a muffler bushing. They didn't go to muffler bearings until '85.

It does look like the cylinder head dowl that is used to align the head with the block. I didn't know there are two of these. One in front and one in back? Both on left side of block? Specter catalogue shows just one (part #90).

Thanks for your input.

Yes, it's a head dowel sleeve. One in the front headbolt and one in the rear bolt hole.

But I am concerned about the dowel in the main bearing bolt hole.

There are 2 dowel sleeves in every main cap. But they are supposed to stay in the cap, not the block. Make sure that yours are all present and accounted for.
