g'day everyone..

just to share some experiment results with you all.. hope you all can add in some experience results too. thank you and cheers!


engine type: LC200 4.5Liter V8 Twin Turbo Diesel
test mileage: 5,000KM on each type of oil (5W-40 and 10W-40)


oil: 5W-40 SHELL Fully Synthetic
40% more expensive than the other oil (10W-40)
fuel consumption: 11.8Liter/100KM (average after 5,000KM)
engine very quiet and feels very "light" standing start and pick up
after 4000KM, my engine had consumed 1Liter of engine oil!


oil: 10W-40 SHELL Synthetic (me too wondering does this mean semi or fully??)
much cheaper oil compared to the first option
fuel consumption: 14.8Liter/100KM (average after 5,000KM)
engine is rough and loud and it is very heavy from standing start
after 5000KM, engine oil is exactly the same, zero consumption

my conclusion.. i am now back on the expensive 5W-40 and vow to check my engine oil regularly just in case i need a "top-up" now and then.. hey especially those who are using diesel engine, which type of oil are you using? do kindly share with us.. thank you very much and cheers!!

Well, one main issue is that the North American market did not get the V8 twin turbo diesel as an engine option here. All we have gotten are the gasser 5.7--which does not call for a diesel oil but does call for a lighter weight synthetic oil--mainly a 5-20 So, we might not be the best comparative market in answering or assisting with your question. The Australians might have some better answers for you.

That said, there are many diesel options here in the states.

On my 1FZ-FE petrol, I use 15-40 Shell Rotella during the summer months (read: hot/dry) and then usually one oil change in the winter with 5-40 synthetic Shell Rotella. I like the lighter weight oil in the winter for cold start ups and the heavy weight oil in the summer for quality wear characteristics.
Many folks use diesel oils in there petrol spec. engines here--especially those with higher miles and older engines.

Hi Jennifer, check out the LCOOL forum www.lcool.org/forum here in Australia. We have severall threads with one running at the moment and with you being in Singapore your climate is similar to ours in the north (maybe you are an Aussie?). Recently on the thread a Brisbane dealer was quoted as saying anyone living north of Brisbane should use 20/50 (assuming here mineral oil base) and a number of members south use 15/40. I am still experimenting.

thank you guys.. g'day jeff i was staying in mosman (sydney) for 18 years before i move back to singapore. i still pop downunder couple of times a year to catch up with friends and got to check on the house too.. anyway i will check out the website asap. cheerio matey! - jennifer
 
which it's the recomended oil in your manual . ?

Wonder coz here I would like to have something like full sinth 5W-50 that have Mobil 1 .. but specific application of Mobil 1 it's for gasser they call CF been CF too which means can be used in a diesel engine that have emision controls as yours ..
 
my dealer is using 15W40 on 200 V8 diesel. engine is smooth but recently i noticed that the engine is consuming oil. (maybe from the beginning). there is no unusual knocking or anything like that. i called them up and the dealer responded that they need to change vacuum pump. has anyone faced similar problems?

You will consume some oil during the engine break in period. That is normal.
