It's time for me to do an oil change. The engine has 260 thousand miles on it and the oil is black so I was debating methods to flush the engine. I had considered the oil cleaning additives but had probably decided I wasn't comfortable with those but I was considering changing the oil and filter, then running it for a short time to collect all the carbon and dirt before draining that and changing the oil again.

Dose anyone do that and have any thoughts on if it would be worthwhile or is it going to be spending money for no reason.

Unless you have pulled the valve cover, are burning massive qts of oil, or have a known sludge motor, its a waste of time. Oil changes color but one cannot judge the condition of a motor by the color of the oil. Stick to regular oil changes, proper air intake system maintenance, and if need be catch some oil from a couple of oil changes and get it tested by a lab to see if everything is in good operating condition.

Yeah I agree with what was said above. Oil in diesels turns black a short period after changing. It's just how it is. You could try and engine flush product. It won't hurt and might be peace of mind for you, but it's a lot of effort for something that's likely not necessary

Not needed. Change your oil and filter when the manual says to do so and use oil the manual specifies, and don't worry about it.

Thanks all, those replies are useful. I'll put there down as something not worth worrying about and carry on with just changing the oil.
