I'm only asking 'cuz a lot of people say stuff like that, but when I try to track down the numbers, they just ain't there .... Seems they always read it somewhere ....

:D :meh:

Here is the latest M1 product guide. I was wrong. They only increased 10% from previous formulation. 10w-40 is SN and with high ZDDP because the 40wts are exempt from the ZDDP rqmts for SN. You get the best of both worlds.

This HM oil is exceptional. I run the 5w-30 in my 100 series.

You guys know too much about oil haha

I'm pretty tempted to try the Rotella Oil. Always see it on the shelf at Walmart just mocking me. Although the Castrol GTX Diesel looks nice too... Choices, choices...

Glad you guys are doing the footwork for me ;)

I was curious what the ZDDP levels were for the Gastrol GTX 10-40.

Last oil change I went with the Diesel 15-40 but was tempted by the 10-40 since it came in the gallon jugs and was a lot cheaper than buying 10 quarts of the 15-40.

Anybody know how they compare?

From CASTROL:

Here is a response from Castrol regarding their products and ZDDP:

Castrol does offer the following products that contain Zinc at a level that is higher than the Zinc level found in oils (API SG) marketed during the "muscle car" era of time:

* Castrol GTX 20W-50 (SL, SM)
* Castrol GTX Diesel 15W-40 (CI4, CH4, CG4, CF4, CF, SL)
* Castrol GTX High Mileage 20W-50 (SL, SM)
* Castrol HD 30 (SL, SM)
* Castrol HD 40 (SL, SM)
* Castrol Syntec Blend Truck 15W-40 (CI4, CH4, CG4, CF4, CF, SL) (Semi-synthetic)
* Castrol Section Extra 15W-40 (CI4Plus, CI4, CH4, CG4, CF4, SL)
* Castrol Hyperons S 15W-40 (CI4Plus, CH4, CG4, SL) (Semi-synthetic)

You can see that the traditional CASTROL GTX isn't on the list.

For What it's worth.

I see Amsoil lists two "Z-Rod" oils, 10-30 and 20-50, with higher zinc. They say specifically for flat-tappet motors. I think this is a new item for them...? It is pretty spendy though.

I contacted Rotella today and asked them about the ZDDP in their 10w30..................
.......................

Josh,

Shell Rotella T Triple Protection Oil SAE 10W-30 contains
approximately 1200 ppm zinc, the same amount as found in our SAE 15W-40 oil.

Thank you for your interest in Shell Lubricants!

And there you have it.

Well, as in the other thread, what you have for Rotella T is the minimum amount of zddp recommended for older flat-tappet engines, but what happens when you put that oil in your engine and turn the key ? The add-pack immediately starts being depleted... How much zddp do you think is left after 5K miles? 7K miles ?

I'd much, much rather start with an oil in the 1600 ppm range for zddp so after a few thousand miles, hopefully, it would still have sufficient anti-wear goodies left.

Shell has probably just up'd the zinc levels so they could add the "Flat-Tappet" coverage to their advert propaganda. I'm sure they read the forums, too.... Don't get me wrong, I think Rotella T5 and T6 are great oil, just no longer for our motors.

Let's beat this ol' dead horse summmorah, I ain't had me enough malt-likka !!!

Well, you can't go wrong with Rotella T. I don't go 5-7K between changes either.

I'ts all pretty good oil. All we have to do is keep it at the correct level, change oil and the filter when it gets dirty.

Would you recommend the same for the 3FE? Mine has 290K on the clock. Oil is super clean and I want to jeep it that way.

Which of the CAT oils do you run exactly?

I've got the Cat 15W40 DEO in it right now: http://www.cat.com/cda/files/1386201/7/pehj0059-02.pdf

And have a pail of the Cat Arctic DEO syn 0W30 to run or blend for winter: http://www.cat.com/cda/files/1386265/7/PEHJ0008[1].pdf Would be way thin for most of you guys, but I've had to start my truck at 35 or 40 below without having been plugged in.

I won the pail of Arctic DEO at an event a couple years ago and when I looked up the specs online to see if it was worth using, I really liked what I saw and started buying the 15W40 as well.

Is the zinc or lack thereof an issue if you change your oil every 3,000 miles or less? I have been using the Shell Rotella 15W40 from BJ's...They sell a 3 gallon box for about $30.00.

there are only so many refineries that produce oil- it's not like each brand has there own. I bet they run the castrol jugs through and then load the rack with autozone jugs and so on. fwiw, i just had my oil changed at the dealership and i told them to use 20w 50 and they used castrol.
