I was offered an engine out of a 1974 FJ40. I happen to be in the market for one for my 60. The number stamped on the passenger side of the block is F 553488. I am assuming that this is an F and not a 2F, since I read that the 2F came in 1975. I also read that the F motor had the oil filler on the side of the motor. This had the filler on top. The whole engine was very similar to the 2F in my 60.

Anyone know what I'm looking at and if it would work in my '84?

Thanks!

Sounds like a 1974 F engine.

You could make it work....but I would look for a later 2F 85,86,87...but that is probably just me.

That is what is called an F and 1/2, a one year transition motor from 1974. It is the best of the Fs, with the 2F oiling system.

I am not really sure what you are looking at; however, I recommend putting a Chevy 350 motor in your 60.... It is an absolute dream when it's done.

a 2f into a F motored Cruiser is good, a F motor in to a 2F Cruiser is going the wrong way, stick with the 2F, 81-87 should all be close enough to work in any 60

Thanks for the quick input. Since it turned out to be an F, there is no way it's going in the 60. The price was right though..............

I couldn't let this slide by. My '76 40 has a '71 F in it. I recently had to choose whether to (re)build it again or replace. I like the "classicness" of the F engine and the simplicity of its design. It runs great too. To each his own.

Leon...
