Is that a hydraulic fluid filter just above the cross member? That orange "exhaust pipe" must be an electrical conduit?
 
It appears the transfer case does have a filter. It also has some sort of insulation on the case, perhaps for sound reduction? A cooler is probably plumbed in to the circuit, too.
