I replaced my front speakers about a year ago with stock toyota speakers. suprisingly they still sound very nice, i just recently got an alpine head unit. Now all i need to make the stereo real nice is a subwoofer. i was thinking of just going with a 10 or 12. Will the stock power system handle this w/o too much trouble?

sub size doesn't help much, but I'm guessing you're going to use around a 500 watt mono amp. Yes and if you are in doubt, get a cap for the amp.

My only note of caution is DO NOT deep cycle the battery, you will burn through alternators. This means do not run the system with the engine off at high levels or for long periods of time.

I think he is asking about whether or not he will need an amplifier, and will the head-unit be sufficient in powering it. If that's what you're asking, then no. You'll need to purchase an amp. 600watts or higher, of a quality brand (Audiobahn is good, so is Rockford), and if you have issues with distortion or flickering of your lights/random cut-offs of the speakers, then you will want to get a capicator.

Good luck, and happy thumping.

Cruiserhead,
You will definitely need some kind of external power. The stock power is not enough and if you try and power a 10" or 12" sub with that little power you run the risk of frying the headunit through back feed (the sub trying to draw more power when there is non). a Small 250watt amp to your 10" is enough if you just want a kick, through in a 12 and 750watts and you'll be making some noise. Wiring is very easy for a single amp.

Sam - Sorry to be off topic, but still tech, what are the LINK sliders in your sig and do you have any pics? Assuming LINK is the company that made them?

Guys, i had always imagined getting an amp for whatever sub i buy. sorry i didnt make it clear. i was just wondering if the power outlet of the stock 80 would handle say a 500watt amp fine? or would like the headlights dim out when it hits. and would it put a drain on the battery. Also, if anyone has/or knows anyone with any good subs, boxes, amps, and wiring. i'm looking for it all...sometime in the near future.

I run a lot of power to my components and sub (well over 1500 watts) but use a 3 farad cap and never have drained my battery from normal use or had problems with headlights dimming, etc...
