Electrical Loss when starting

The wife went to start the 80. She turned the key and nothing happened. Turn the key of and tried again. It started but the clock and radio lost its memory.
I tried to get it to do it my self but it wouldn't do it again.

Could this be a started problem?
The battery is clean and cables are tight.
 
I was with EricsBruiser last night. He has a 91 and when he would switch to the high beams his radio would shut off and reset. We replaced the ground cable. 90% of his problem went away, now it just slightly dims. He's now going to get both new Toyota cables as the ground was $5.00 autozone special.

I'd start there, especially with your mileage.
 
I was going to replace the ground on my next c-dan order as the part of the cable end that keeps the bolt from spinning when you turn the nut is striped.
I will get both new cables and a new fuseable link too.
I will clean all the grounds on the body as I am sure they are corroded or rusted.

This must be related to when I installed the Slee harness. I would lose all battery when I started the motor. The battery power would return after a couple of min.
 
From what Eric told me his factory cables were very expensive. You might try the $5.00 jobby as a trouble shooting tool before laying out the $75.00 for the factory one. On Erics the ground was a 2 wire setup. One large wire to the engine and then a small one to the body inside the battery tray area. On the AutoZone cable you had to crimp on the body wire to a tail provided.
 
$75 for - and about $170 for the +.
I think I will just clean them up real good.
 
It's not so much the ends as it's the integrity of the cable itself and the wires connection inside the crimp. Erics ends were fine but when you pulled back the sheathing the copper wire was s***. You could untwist the wire and the strands weren't clean. Wires like what Eric has can lead to fires as the current draw increase heats up the wire. His was also coated nicely with engine oil ::).
 
I used some Ox-gard on the ends of some of the Slee harness.
Ox-gard is a conductive grease unlike dielectric grease (non-conductive).
I wounder if Ox-gard if for high voltage AC use and not DC? The tube doesn't say AC or DC on it.
 
Kurt, I'm not familiar with that stuff but I can't se AC or Dc making any difference. How ever the AMPs that it's conductiong might. I've never used anything on my terminals, just kept them clean and tight.
