Can you plug in the harness to the trunk area, pull out the rear bulbs and see if you still blow a fuse?

If yes, do you have the ability to separate the left side from the right side of the trunk harness and then disconnect only ONE side and repeat test?

If no, plug in the bulbs on the left or right side of the car and see if you blow a fuse.

At least this way, I was hoping to find out if the short is inside the light fixtures (which is common due to corrosion, etc) or somewhere else (like near the tranny rev switch).

Let us know what you find out

That was my next test but haven't had time to fiddle with it.

I took the reverse lights out and tested the fuse by shifting into reverse. It blew. So I'm thinking of moving to the tranny reverse switch now. Maybe there's a short in it.

you're getting closer it sounds like. How about disconnecting the rear trunk harness from the main harness and doing the same test?

I need to see if that can be done. I know there's a wire bundle coming up the trunk support so I just need to figure out if it has a connector allowing me to isolate it. I let my father take it home yesterday so now I've got a pro with plenty of spare time on his hands to work on it.

Problem solved (I hope). There was a wire in the harness that got pinched in the torsion springs that help lift and hold the trunk up. The insulation was worn away and was shorting out. I'll post a picture when I get around to it (and the car is back in my posession).

Nice.
