We took our new 20' Forest River camper for a four day trip and gave it a bit of a stress test. One major thing we're missing is a way to purify water.

The camper has a built in 100 watt solar panel and inverter that provides more than enough power, so we can run an electric purification system - the problem is I have no idea where to start looking, all my Google searches are coming back with small camping purifiers and the like.

What do you guys suggest?

Electric water purifier....you mean like boil the water?
Maybe you're thinking of an electric pump through a filter or a UV style sterilizer.
I just use a steripen for drinking water that I don't boil. Otherwise boiling works fine.

For extended camping I use a sawyer inline filter. It can run gravity (slow obviously) or with some pressure. Comes with an adapter for use with a house city tap, so can obviously handle some reasonable pressure through the filter.

I use a submersible pump when in oz and I find a water tank or somewhat decent rain water (rock holes etc), in the US there's plenty of streams in some areas. I use a shorty inline carbon filter (the cheap sort for ice makers etc) as a 'disposable' sediment pre-filter.

Link to the sawyer type filter I use -> 3-Way Inline Water Filter | Sawyer Products

The submersible I use is a 12V Whale pump. Some tygon hose to plumb things together.

Though for 4 days I can't imagine you can't take enough potable water with you... You don't need potable for showers :)

Obvious question: Exactly how much potable water do you need per day?

cheers,
george.

Sawyer makes fine product, and good prices.

For what you are looking for, i would buy a Zodi, or a knockoff shower set up. That way you get a pump, and a showerhead, then add a pre-filter for sediment, and stick that Sawyer inline filter too. Dont bother with the new chinese 2 piece setups, unless you want one to wash the dog with.

R&M Enterprises used to make a sweet pump/ heat exchanger/ showerhead, that plugged into the heater lines on the truck. Was a magnificent set up, but last i saw, was 429! now NLA. Still a writeup on the web about it.

An MSR guardian is hard to beat for safe high volume drinking water and has an extremely long service life. I keep one in my camper.

For water purification maybe something like the Icon Lifesaver Jerry Can. The link is here: Icon Lifesaver Jerry Can
Not electric but a simple hand pump attached to the Jerry Can. They have a nozzle feature for dishes and showers, BUT NOT HEATED.

I have been looking at the MSR Guardian. They go on sale at REI at the end of the week. Pricey but they seem to be top notch.

The guardian is top notch. As I mentioned before I have 2. One in our camper and another at our house since we are on a well in case of power outages. Used have them in the field for years doing disaster response filling 5 gallon containers. A little large for backpacking but nothing else comes close.
