Just got back from the open house.

I actually had the opportunity to speak w/ Kathy hardy, the forest supervisor. Very NICE lady and empathized w/ us and our recreation.
So the jist is... At the conclusion of the last round of comments, the proposed action plan (proposal 1) was to keep the trails open, even though there were trails that did NOT meet the criteria for safe meadows crossings. The comments were gathered and the action plan was submitted for re eval which includes evaluation by the judge and lawyers.
This is where it breaks down...
The judge and lawyers then reviewed the issues and saw additional problems, primarily, problems w/ FIXING the issues on some of the trails to MINIMIZE the impacts. This is where the NEW proposal (proposal 3) comes into play, which is, of the 42 routes 18 trails are to remain CLOSED until the issues are FIXED!! Deer valley, strawberry and Barrett are among those 18 trails. This could take YEARS!!!
For a bit of perspective. If proposal 3 is accepted, Barrett lake will be the FIRST trail to be addressed. They would expect that to be re opened by late summer or fall. That,BTW, was the trail that required the LEAST amount of work.
So... Here's where WE come in!!! LISTEN UP!!
This is where public input is SO IMPORTANT!!
We need to comment in support of PROPOSAL 1, which is keep the trails OPEN for use and address the issues.

the comments should include:
Support proposal 1
How we recreate
Why its important to us in our recreation
Mention the fact that these trails have been in use for over a HUNDRED YEARS without impact.
Propose that since the issues are identified they can now be addressed with the trails open
Suggest that the "problem areas" on the trail should be MARKED w/ suggestions of HOW TO CROSS the sensitive areas w/ minimal impact WHILE the trail remains OPEN during the repair process.

Kathy also OFFERED to come talk w/ is at the April meeting and went so far as to pencil us in for that evening!!!!!

WRITE THOSE COMMENTS, have you wife and kids write comments ask others to write comments!! This is where the NUMBERS will make a difference!!

Thanks Keith for going to the meeting! Unfortunately it wasn't possible for me to attend...we had 5-showings lined up yesterday. I felt like the host of an open house (I'm not complaining ;)).

Anyone sit down to write comment yet?!

Anyone have any thoughts on FS coming to talk at the April meeting?
