Background:
"Christmas for Kids" is an annual program within El Paso County that is supported by several organizations, one being Colorado Springs Christian 4Wheelers (CSC4W).
CSC4W works with the County Department of Human Services (DHS) to "sponsor" children and senior citizens in poor circumstances. Jim J. is the coordinator for CSC4W, and I contacted him about our club supporting his club.
How it works:
Coordinators at various clubs and organizations get volunteers to sponsor a child and/or senior. Coordinators tell DHS "I have volunteers for X number of children, and Y number of seniors." DHS then gives the coordinators some details about the sponsored children/seniors--first name, male/female, age, etc. For children, DHS will tell what the child has requested for a Christmas gift. For a senior, DHS will tell what the senior needs as a "care package" (generally toiletries, etc.)
The coordinator passes this information to the volunteer/sponsor. The volunteer then goes shopping, buys the child's gift or the senior's "care package" item(s). I'm told the average is $30. Then the volunteer/sponsor boxes/wraps the gift and puts a label on it (I'm not sure how the label works--might be an alpha-numeric code so they can distinguish recipients through specific DHS case managers, etc?) Finally, the volunteer takes the package to the DHS collection point (Stetson Hills PD Station, 4110 Tutt Blvd.) between 7am and 1pm on Sunday, December 12th (maybe we can tweak this in some way since 12/12 is our last day on the USFS tree-cutting event support...for example, maybe one or two CLC Members who are NOT going up the mountain that Sunday morning can meet those who ARE going up the mountain to collect and deliver the packages.)
Call to action:
If you're willing and able, please sponsor one or more children and/or seniors.
Next Step:
Send me and @LC4LIFE a private message, tell us how many children/seniors you want to sponsor. We will need your email and phone number to forward to Jim J. (LC4LIFE needs to know in case I get hit by a forklift, or something
)
I don't know an end-date/suspense date/need to know by date. For now let's assume Jim J. needs to know by Tuesday, November 30th.
