Hi,

In 2012 or 2013 we ship our Land Cruiser HZJ78 campervan to the USA. With our Troopie we want to travel across the U.S.A. from East to West.
Is there a route across America, where trails and tracks are connected to each other, so we can drive off-road as much as possible? And where can we find information about this route?

Thanks, Rob

Thanks for the information of the Trans-Am Trail, but the costs of a complete set of maps and charts are $372.-.
Maybe someone knows a cheaper way to get good information?
:confused:

I posed this question over on expedition portal last week. The trans am trail came up but as you noticed its pricy. Everything west of the misssissippi should be pretty easy to connect. It's east of the river that will be more complicated. I really want to do something similar. I would say start looking at google earth. Where are you starting on the easy coast?

@paulbgardner
We ship our Troopy to Halifax (Nova Scotia, Canada) and then we enter de USA in Maine and we drive, around the big cities on the East Coast, in south-west direction. We want to see parts of the Appalachian Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains NP. After that it’s partly open for us. Maybe we are going to make a sidestep to New Orleans for some musical impulses.
Our main goals are the Grand Canyon NP and many National Parks in South Utah.

Maybe some of you have some 4x4-tips for us, so we can add the tips to our "4x4-ToDo List".:steer:

Unfortunately our books don't start until Colorado, so we can't help with the east coast (yet!). We do have GPS tracks for our CO & Moab books, which can help some - Google Earth is definitely your friend :)

@FunTracks

Thanks for your link.
The web has become an info-jungle.
We sure will look into your information.

@ntsaint

That’s a good idea. Maybe you can help us with some “Cajun-4x4-tracks” or “Tony Joe White-4x4-trails” in Louisiana for our musical boost, if there are any.:clap:

I may be into joining up from Western Colorado through say Nevada. If you are up for company.

Unfortunately I'm way north of cajun country! And there are absolutely zero good places to ride in Louisiana. Quite a few just north of me in ARK.

Hopefully this gets put together, i'm in for a large chunk of the ride.

We like it a lot to have company on our journey through the States. :)
We keep you posted in this thread as soon as we know when we can come to the USA and when we are in the neighbourhood of your home-States.

The Pony Express Route is an interesting option for us. Hopefully it’s not to remote from National Parks and other places we want to see. But it’s always possible to integrate parts of the Pony Express Route in our plans. It’s not clear to me how much of the route is an off-road trail. I have to look into that.
Thanks for the information.:)
It’s beautiful to get ideas like this, for we can experience parts of the history of the USA. We can take the time to do more than some quick sightseeing.

I checked my Benchmark Maps and they mapt the Pony Express Trail from west of the central portion of Utah all the way through Nevada.

Pony Express National Historic Trail (U.S. National Park Service)

The above website is a little short on details, but perhaps you can contact a field office of the blm along the way. They tend to have literature at the local office as well as people there to help

Hi Kofoed,

Your last link to the Pony Express trail map and the Rand McNally map we have, shows us that indeed a large chunk of that trail is off the beaten track. :bounce::bounce:
So we will add this 4WD trail to our itinerary. It sure looks beautiful. The extra information you sent us will help us too.
Thanks for helping me out.:clap:

Hi Papalud and other travellers,

In my opening question I stated that we planned our journey in 2012 or 2013.
We didn’t manage to sell our house in time. So we hope to come to the USA in March or April 2013. We have a little window in time when we want to arrive in your Country. That’s because April is for us the opening of the season. Until November we have a reasonable long time to travel around in the States and Canada, before we go South to Mexico and further on.

We keep you guys posted.
Maybe some of you have some extra ideas for our off road trail through the States. Some ideas of beautiful places tourists normally do not visit are also welcome.

Happy Trails,

Rob

Hi Guys,

Here is an update.
Our HZJ78 Campervan will be shipped to Halifax in April this year. In May we can start our “Pan American Trip” from Canada to Argentina. We have visa for 180 days traveling the USA.
Now we can carry out our plans. Here you can see our itinerary brought onto a map.

The route can and will be changed, that's a part of our adventurous journey. This route connects for us the places to be in the USA and Canada.

See you guys out there.

Rob

Wait. You are tracking all over this fine country and completely omitting Colorado?!?

See if you can make it to the San Juan's for a week or two. Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Lake City should get you started.

But seriously, looks like a great itinerary.
