I need to tighten up my power steering belt, as it is squealing when I try and turn the 33" tires.

What is the easiest way to tighten it up?

I took a look and it seems as though I need to remove the fan shroud and I guess the fan itself.

Any ideas, the truck itself is a 1991 LJ-78 Prado with the 2L-TE

Thanks in advance

is the belt loose or just worn?
either way you can adjust the tension with the fan inplace...
cheers

Thanks Wayne, what's the easiest way to do that.

Just reach down and do it that way, seems like it would be totally blind this way, and tough as there isn't much clearance.

sounds like it will be a fun one, guess I'll wait for a warmer day= less swearing and crying

I find the best way is to loosen the 14mm bolt on each side of the slide bracket just slightly then use a 2ft prybar to tension the belt with 1 arm and use a 14mm box wrench to tighten the bolt on the slotted side of the bracket 1st. Then tighten the remaining bolt. You stick the prybar between the bottom/side of the timing belt cover between the pump and the block. You can easily overtighten it so use discretion. If it's tight and squeeling, the belt is too small or is worn. Should take all of about 5 minutes to do. Yes you can leave everything else intact. If you need to, remove the gravel guard and get at it easier from the underside. Since you ultimately have to tension it from the topside anyway, you're better off just doing it without messing with the gravel guard.

Thanks Guys, I'll just have to deal with the squealing for a little longer as it is -22 C for the next couple days and no shop.

Don't know if it will work. But on my car I had trouble tightening the alt belt. I used belt dressing from C-tire. It did stop the squealing for a bit. I have no idea if it hurts or helps the belts. But it made me feel better. Says on the can it makes belts last longer. But one of my co workers said it destroyed the belt on one of his trucks.... so I dunno

But I did finally get my belt tight.
