I was pulling some stumps with my pto last weekend and somehow I sheared off the 4 bolts that secure the e-brake housing to the transfer case, has anyone had this happen? I put it in reverse a few times with the winch hooked up to bump the stumps loose, I heard somthing rattling underneath and it was the cable spinning around with the driveline, did I reverse withe the brake engaged and this is what sheared the bolts? or did somthing come loose inside and bind it up? the adjusting hardwear was broke loose but I think that happed when the whold thing spun around. I would think whatever the reason was that the engine would have bogged down and I would have noticed before this happend, I have a 70 fj40 with a f engine, I also recently repalced the output shaft seal so the bolts were tight, any thoughts??

i sheared all the bolts and broke a good chunk of the housing off .

backing up with a v8 , it didn't even notice the brake was on , i just herd a large crack and whip whip (cables hitting the body)

i just spun the bolts out and welded the chunk back on there , been working great since then .

i stopped using the e-brake unless im on a hill .

Hi All:

Yep, I busted three of the four bolts holding the t-case mounted parking brake assembly on my FJ40 a few years ago. Similar situation - backing-up while in low-range.

Amazingly, I drove like 100 miles or so in that condition until one of the bolts fell into the p-brake drum and started binding-up! Pulled the rear drive shaft and drove home in the front wheel drive! :D

Good luck!

Alan

Thanks for the replies. I just wanted to make sure I was not overlooking somthink , it seems like that would not be a unlikely place to break. I removed the broken bolts and cable, I will install a cable and adjusting hardwear from my old t-case and see what I can break next!! Should I use grade 8 bolts?
