Dust under infotainment screen after CarPlay retrofit install (pic included.) Pretty positive is wasn't there before, how can I clean it?

Hey everyone, I was so excited to finally get CarPlay and sprung an arm and a leg to get it and also have it installed by the pros.

Vehicle is a 2019 Toyota LC200. This product was installed: LGVIF-CB6W Wireless S-Connect Interface for Select 2019-2021 Toyota La - https://www.beatsonicusa.com/products/lgvif-cb6w-wireless-s-connect-interface-for-select-2019-2021-toyota-landcruiser?srsltid=AfmBOopQ8GqfBq_btzbvrNVLFhA5GAp4Ilr543CoYQ4UCWK4badQl2u7

I am usually extremely particular about dust and keep my interior and everything extremely clean so I'm sure there was not this level of dust before the install. I mean, if that was the case I would have installed a whole separate head unit rather than a retrofit, this dust was the first thing I noticed when getting my car back the installer told me when I brought this up that it was not possible for this to happen during the install because if they access it would void the warranty or something along those lines. I'm honestly extremely annoyed and can't see this even if it seems ridiculous for some people I have an appointment with the dealer Tuesday to ask them about it, but I'm sure once I say I got something installed they won't wanna touch it.

Can anybody chime in here? It was a BeatSonic install (I went to an authorized BeatSonic installer), is there anyway that this issue could have happened during the install process? I guess it's possible that I just never noticed that but I highly doubt it.

And if anybody has experience with this issue, how did you solve it? I've never done a chargeback ever in my whole life and this is the first time I'm ever considering calling the credit card company if there is no simple fix or if the company installed it doesn't fix it. But if it is the case that there is zero chance it is their fault, I dont want to make a fool of myself stirring up trouble.

Note in the photo I wiped down almost every speck of dust so everything you are seeing is the dust underneath the plastic panel.

I do not have an answer for you as I never opened the OEM headunit.
Just for clarification this is the OEM headunit, and you just added Carplay via an external device, right?
Also useful to specify what truck you're driving.

Sorry, it is a 2019 Toyota LC200. I didn't install it, an authorized installer for BeatSonic installed it for me. So yes, this is the OEM head unit, all I know is that they take it out, work some magic behind the scenes, and replace the same head unit. So I think its just a bunch of wires and computers placed behind the original hardware.

Even someone not “extremely particular” would notice the dust. It’s really obvious and I’m surprised the installer returned it to you like that. I agree the dealer won’t want to get involved with aftermarket, but they may know how you can get the dust out?

Yeah, I mean this is how it looks when the sun hits it. Id say on the 20 minute drive home I could see the dust for a good 5 of those minutes. I'm pretty OCD about dust and stuff and have shined a flashlight multiple times on the head unit... So it's not that I am calling the installer a liar or anything, they were really great, but they insist that there is no possibility that it could have been caused by them. But I am OCD about this kind of stuff so I know for a fact there wasn't anything there before.

But idk, if this is something that a bunch of people from this forum say 'oh yeah, I see dust there when I shine a flashlight' then I guess maybe I just never noticed. Have you or anyone else ever experienced this?

I have the same Beatsonic unit installed in my 2020 LCHE. I will say that I am not particular about the dust stuff, so can't really say if I have it (or had it before the install), but I can check later when I am in the truck. That said, I did my own installation of the Beatsonic unit. It was a pain the ass and not an easy job. Doable, but you need patience and a good 3 to 4 hours to spare. This was my second install of a BT unit. During the install I never once came close to somehow access the panel behind the screen. You can check BT install instruction video in YT and this never happens. You just remove the whole unit from the dash and work your way with the connections in the back. Never inside the screen or anything like that. I am not saying your installation guys did not cause the issue, but if they followed the regular instruction from BT, I find it hard to blame it on them.

yeah exactly, you hit the nail on the head. I'm not trying to find a way to blame them. I guess I'm trying to figure out if once that radio and everything is unplugged— are any of the ports or anything creating or exposing an opening to getting stuff inside? I guess if a bunch of other people also had dust in the screen and never took it apart I would feel better because perhaps it is a Toyota issue. But its just so hard to believe I never noticed it in over 30k miles of driving and then its the first thing I notice after its installed.

I didn’t mention it in my previous post, but mine is not dusty. Many members drive their trucks in extremely dusty conditions and if the MFD was susceptible to dust intrusion, it would be a common problem noted on here.

Thank you for checking! I’m going to the dealer tomorrow, I’m just wondering what actions to take if the dealer tells me it is not a known issue and if installing 3rd party equipment back there increases the risk of dust. I mean I assume I’m SOL if they tell me I need a whole new head unit.

Well, if it was mine, I’d live with it. It would not be worth the money to replace it; I’d rather spend it on something useful. And going back in to clean it has its own big risks.

Yeah I agree. I saw the dealer and spoke with the shop foreman— all he could confidently tell me was he had never seen this happen in any Toyota screen brought to his dealership. He just said they would not even touch it— wouldn't even provide a quote or attempt to do it, but he said third party shops might. I probably just have to deal with it because it's a he said she said kind of thing.

I was finally able to check my screen in the truck and (although not pristine clean) it does not show any specs of dust inside the screen. All the dust I could see was outside and move with a blow or touch. Like I said above, I installed the Beatsonic unit myself and followed their YT video instructions. Not once I had to tinker with the front part of the screen.
