That was a great run through the canyon today, thank you to everyone who helped put it together.

Afterwards Pappy and I headed North, with me following, to reach I-25 via Magdalena. When we reached Socorro and were about to turn onto the freeway Pappy very fortunately stopped in a McDonalds car park, where it instantly became clear my car had a problem:

Pappy pumped it back up, only to reveal a deep cut in the center of the tread:

This must have happened in just the last mile or so, because it was deflating quickly and yet the rim had not shredded the tire.

Huge thanks to Pappy who in the interest of keeping us moving stepped in and had the spare mounted within minutes!

Looks like it's time for some proper all-terrain tires.

Just so. Current tires came with the car when I bought it a year ago, and I was expecting them to last until right around the time I arrived here. I'll be looking for a set of 285/75/16 Duratracs tomorrow. Any suggestions on where to buy them in ABQ?

Just one data point against the DuraTracs. Some folks I talked to at Cruise Moab who have experience with various brands including their current set of DuraTracs told me that they have weaker sidewalls than the other usual suspects and they will not be buying them again. I like the look and on-road performance of them but have been second guessing getting them when my current set of BFG A/Ts is finished. I'm starting to lean toward a set of the BFG A/T KO2.

I heard this too and compared a set of 37" DuraTracs with a set of 315 Goodyear MTRs side by side. Both tires had identical # of sidewall plies and both were LTs. So, I'm confused as to why the DTs have a weaker sidewall.

Duratracs are fine as far as reliability. All Goodyear tires have suspect sidewalls as far as puncture proof, even the Kevlar version. My only complaint in 50,000 miles on 285/70-17 Duratracs were that they got louder as they got older.
Rocks and mesquite will go right through the sidewall. BFG's have the toughest sidewall of the popular "street" tires.

By the way, it was good to meet you Neville and David.

well guys my 2 cents is that you may want to look at the Cooper ST Maxx which I have and really like.............

I have 255/85r16 Cooper S/T maxx on mine, I only have about 2,000 miles on them but I'm pretty happy with them. Really quiet (so far) for how aggressive they are. They seem to be reasonably tough, over rock and mesquite. Not sure how well they handle compared to other tires just because that is the only thing I've had on it outside of some highway tread.

Buddy of mine has the Cooper Discoverer ST's, I have the Kevlar MTR's. Running the same trails with arguably me driving faster, his chunked out massively and mine look new still. I've heard complaints about all tires and the sidewalls at some time or another. Learn how to drive and not cut corners and hit the things you want to hit and your tires will last a very long time. I got 50K miles out of my original MTR's and they were trashed.

My old MTR's were abused more than most from the sandstone scrubs in the Glade, my letters almost disappeared.
