I've painted my second FZJ80 with Durabak but discovered it bubbled up over the primered areas of the truck. I think this may be due to 1) sanding during the prep with 2) incomplete cleaning of the primer sand particles with xylene before roller'ing over it. A hot, high-pressure car wash ripped entire patches off the truck.

So here's my plan:

1. Go through that same car wash 3 times and see what areas it manages to rip off.

2. Take a paint scraper and scrape off the loose edges.

3. Wipe out the exposed areas of primer with xylene and allow to dry.

4. Re-roll 4 more coats of Durabak.

Does this sound about right? Anyone else have to go through this? Helpful advise requested!!! Thanks guys.

I use epoxy primer and have learned to let it dry 24 hours before applying final paint. It bubbles just like you talk about if I don't.

Look at the primer spec sheet that you are using for recoat times. Recall that you are not painting in a heated booth, so times need to be adjusted.

So one question is: Can he put durabak on top of durabak?

The manufacturer has told me in the past that you must apply and clean the original coat with xylene then apply the recoat. You might contact Durabak to see if that is still their recommended procedure.
