While thinking Bridgestone Revos (285/75/R16), I am also considering these Dunlop tires for the 80 for on/off highway use, no rock crawling, in size 255/85 RR16 - basically a narrower 33" Load Range D tire. Truck has OME lift.

I am wondering if any of you have some experience with these tires?

I was considering the taller skinner tire too. I think the guy on Expedition west, can't remember his name, has some experience with this size. Couldn't find a lot of guys that had experience with those size tires. Good luck on your search. I ended up with the 285 Revos and love them. Big Bad A... Tires.

PS. Mike go to Expedition West via Google, Scott discusses the narrower, taller, tire. If you get the skinny ones be sure to post up pictures.

I do not have any expeience with that specific tire but I am very much impressed with my Dunlop Radial Mud Rovers that I recently purchased. If this tire is anything like The Mud Rover I would be very happy with it.
 
Thanks Dan. Are the sidewalls three ply equivilent? I cut a lot of sidewalls running around in Nevada.

i've had Mud Rovers on my 60 and my Taco. I'll be getting the 315 mud rovers before Cruise Moab hopefully. i've really enjoyed the tread life and more importantly the price of the dunlop tire. I'd consider the RVXT if they came in a taller size.

I don't know I looked around a bit and did not find anyhing that talked specificly about the sidewalls. My 305/70/16's are Load Range D, if that means anything.
 
Would I expect somewhat less rolling resistance (milage?) and better lateral stability with this tire vs. the Revo in 185/75/R16?

Not Dunlops but I have been runing these (see below) for street tires and have been really happy with them. Big square shoulders like the BFG AT used to have. I am running the 315's and I drive about 20K per year so I am all about endurance. Might not be as sticky as other tires but I have had no issues, I rotate semi religiously and I have over 50k on mine and still serviceable.

The Wild Country tires are what are currently on the truck. They are OK, but it's time to replace them, and I am looking for a longwearng tire - not too noisy - that has decent traction.

My thought is that a slightly narrower tire would actually perform better for my needs, provided the aspect ration was enough to get into the 32.5" to 33.5" height range.

Quiet is good, as I had GY MTRs on my 60 - awesome tires off-road, but noisy on the road. I log most of my miles on long trips - followed by running some pretty marginal roads on fishing, and bird hunting trips.

I've considered those tires - Dunlop RVXT. They look like they could work very well, especially on wet pavement.

I've run the old " Rover " AT's in the past and they wore well. Pretty hard compound, but the price was right.

Tire Rack reviews put the RVXT in the #4 slot in the AT category. Not too bad. Right up there with the Revo's.

You know, I very rarely recommend BFG AT's, but I'm going to here. For what you are talking about, if you want a slightly larger tire than the metric 33", you want a pretty good and reasonably tough rock tire, then get 295/75/16 BFG AT ko's. They should wear quite well even with a decent amount of moderate offroad use...I just don't like them much in wet conditions (rain/snow).

Hey Mike,

I've been running the Dunlop Radial Rover RV (previous version of the RVXT) in a 255/85 16. I'm in the tall skinny camp and have been using these tires since 1996 and sware by them. I'm on my second set and am sorry they are no longer in production. You can see it here:

You WILL notice a difference in gearing as the tires are actually over 33" tall when new. I live in CO and the highway passes and hills do rob you of some speed. On open/flat road it's not an issue. I have them mounted on 7" rims as opposed the stock 8". I am not sure 8" rims will work for that size tire. You need to double check that!!! There are no tire rub issues with the OME lift. The same size spare does fit in the stock location.

IMO the 255/85 16 is the perfect tire for the FZJ80. I wish more tire manufacturers offered this size. In fact, I think that size is becoming harder to find. The next set may have to be the Dunlop Radial Rover RT in a 235/85 16 (32" tall and .5" narrower).

Check out the Toyo M55. We used to run these on all of the survey pickups up on the north slope in Alaska. They wear like steel and I have never seen one flat. The running joke on the slope was that the M55's would outlast the pickups... and I wouldn't doubt if there were a few trucks sent to pasture with their original set. Available in 255/85R16 as well as others.

Only downfall... for the price they should come with solid gold valve stems... about 220 each. But you may get 80-100K out of a set so it's not so bad in the end.

Toyo M55 - I love that tire - if only they made them in a larger size I would own a set today! Why don't these guys perk up and make these in 295 and 315 sizes?

I've cut some sidewalls too, and the list of 3-ply tires (as far as I know) is the following:
BFG MT
BFG AT
GY MT
Firestone Destination MT
Bridgestone Destination MT
Toyo Open Country AT and MT
Cooper Discoverer STT

I am currently running the RVXTs in a 285/75/16. I like them, they appear to wear well and are great in the rain/snow.

That being said, they are a b*tch to balance. I have had them to 4 different Discount Tire shops in the Denver area and they still get a pretty good vibration at @ 70-75 mph.

Thanks. I loved my MTRs for strength and toughness, but the highway noise on a long trip was just too much. I am hoping to find a 33" tri sidewall D rated tire that can do the highway, then give me traction and durability on really bad roads. I think I will try the Revos after all, since Mudrak strongly recommends them.
