Well, I'm leaving in a couple of weeks to go pick up my new 60!

Wife and I will be driving it from Arizona to Massachusetts.

Has anyone else done this trip? Thoughts on routes?

Any thoughts on sites I should check out other than the world's largest ball of string?

Definitely doing the Grand Canyon for sure.

Just curious.

I'm stoked!

Thanks.

You should stop in Memphis and go to the ever famous GRACELAND, home of Elvis, his car museum is the best part

It's been quite a few years since my trip to the grand canyon, but the 2nd best attraction other than the canyon itself was a crater 10 or so miles outside Flagstaff. It was a pretty amazing sight and I remember something about the distance around the crater being a mile or more, I can't remember exactly. Now that I'm thinking about that trip, here are the places I visited:

1. grand canyon
2. crater
3. painted desert
4. petrified forest
5. holiday inn

All of these places are a must see, especially the historical holiday inn! 1-3 are among the best sights I've seen in the US. #4 was kind of interesting for the first few trees, then I got bored (pun intended)

Have a good trip and keep us posted if you can,

Michael

Four Corners of CO, through Wolf Creek pass, down to the San Luis Valley and see the Sand Dunes and eat at Calvillos :D in Alamosa...

After that I have no idea...LOL

I would highly recommend the first 4 of magFJ60's list. In addition, depending on your time table, south eastern Utah and South western Colorado offer amazing scenery.

1. Canyonlands National Park, Utah
2. Arches National Park, Utah
3. Moab.....of course
4. Mesa Verde, CO
5. Durango, CO

If your in the mood for some hiking while you are in the Grand Canyon area, there is an amazing hike to the Havasupai falls, located on the reservation nearby. Chances are you've seen photos of the falls before, but to see them in person is worth the hike in.

Have fun and good luck.

Don't want to sound negative but I though I'd mention that the havasupai hike is 12 miles each way with a backpack. The return trip involves a 1/2 mile or so of steep switchbacks. There is camping available near the falls but you have to make reservations ahead of time with the Havasu Tribe, who live there. There has historically been quite a waiting list for sites. I heard that the falls were terribly damaged by storms a couple of years ago.

Oak creek canyon is worth seeing. Sedona is the place. The west fork provides a nice day hike. If you want to do some wheeling and hiking get a forest service map and go in to west clear creek near Camp Verde, AZ.

There are TONS of strip joints in Dallas.

*if you do come through this way, stop by and I'll take you out for the best Mexican food you'll ever eat in your entire life. Promise.

If I go to Dallas will you take me to the strip joints? Screw the Mexican food, I get that here and its GOOD, but sadly no stip joints.

Bonito's over on Magnolia. You eaten there yet? One of these days where you're free for lunch, we should meet there.

If you get the right dishes at Bonito's, you'll never want to eat Mexican food at another restraunt again. :D

Dude are you kidding me the best? Mercardo Juarez!!!!!

Mercardo Juarez is good, but that's Tex-Mex compared to Bonito's. MJ doesn't serve Cheese-On-Fire like Bonitos does, either - and they put green peas in their rice. :D (and by Cheese-On-Fire, I mean they bring out a bowl of melted queso blanco, dump a shot of tequilla in it, and light it on fire.)

Mmmmm, wish I hadn't eaten luch already.

*when mac comes back, he'll be very proud that this had turned into a food thread. :D

Stop off in Great Falls, VA and pick up some parts I left there. After you stop by my house, go check out the D.C. sites. Sounds like a good plan to me.

SUN Records in Memphis is however a spot you should go to. If you are going to Memphis. And get some hot BBQ sauce while you are there from (some kick ass place I can't remember the name of) and pick up an extra bottle for me. I will drive over and pick it up once I move to Albany. :)

Screw the strip clubs... I'd stop off in Canton, Ohio.

take the Bullfrog Ferry across Lake Powell, beautifull area (cheap ferry) near that area is Hoovenweep (SP?) it's a bunch of Indian ruins built into canyons. there is a Ranger station at the main area, but a few miles down the road, there are more ruins away from the crowd, and they are on BLM land, so you can camp wherever you like for free. BE RESPECTFUL if you go to the BLM area, the ruins are amazing and we want to preserve them for everyone else- sorry, not vibing you, just want the area to stay beautiful. also, there are some Indiana Jones type canyons to go poking around in, some as skinny as Paris Hilton's ankles!

Do the Grand Canyon, but don't spend too much time there -- unless you're doing a boat trip or a donkey ride to the canyon floor. The thing is great, but it's so huge that (at least for me) the 3 or 4 stops we made...it all pretty much looked the same. I'd like to ride down to the bottom or take one of those raft/boat trips through it though.

From the GC, I'd stop in Santa Fe. Really cool town. A must see, IMO. On the way there, stop by CDan's place in ABQ -- you'll be driving right past there.

From Santa Fe, I'd head over to Amarillo and try to tackle that HUGE steak thing that they have there -- the one where if you can eat the thing in an hour, it's free? I'd like to check that one off my list.

From Amarillo, make your way down to the DFW area and stop by and say "Hi" to Swank. Eat some mexi-grub and try to decide if you want to go to Memphis or New Orleans next. If you happen to choose Memphis, ask the locals which BBQ places they like (or read my post in the BBQ section) and do stop by and visit Graceland. DO NOT make a special trip to Memphis just for Graceland...you'd be disappointed, but if you're there anyhow...stop by. If you do go there, please pick up a "TCB" key ring for me...the one I picked up from there is starting to show quite a bit of wear.

If you hit New Orleans, have a freakin' blast.

From either Memphis, or New Orleans, I would make my way east to Savannah. I've never been, but have read quite a bit about it. I'd love to visit sometime. Not much else in GA...'cept a tard with a Dixie horn on his 80...so...you'd make your way north back home along the coast...

That's my suggestion.
