have you tried the smack technique?

in my LC80, it was a huge deal and you had to take apart the dash to do it. I never did it.

Let us know if you find a good DIY solution.

I dont think taking apart the dash would be too hard, but i wonder how hard it would be to get to the light itself.

Mine is out too. I spoke with the dealer about this and the light bulb is cheap (of course), but it would be a minimum of 1-hour of labor if not more to get to. They said they really do have to rip apart a lot of the dashboard to get to it. Now, after getting underneath things already when installing my new stereo, it doesn't look terrible but that is just speculation for now. If I'm not mistaken, the entire instrument cluster comes out without a huge amount of trouble. I ran across a thread about it...guess I'll have to go find it again. That might be the easy way to those lights.

Mine's out too, decided to to do anything about. smack didn't work, it makes sense the d light would burn out since thats the one on all the time. I don't see why smaking would help?

Not real hard , I did mine today, $2 for the light from Toyota, Takes about half an hour.

Remove the top plastic steering column cover and the plastic bit where the dimmer is, then remove the four screws that hold the instrument cluster and two screws for the connectors, lower and pull out the steering column as far as it will go and remove the cluster.

You then have to remove the PCB of the back of the cluster to get to the lights.

Hope this helps.

nice - sounds fairly easy. how long did it take you?

Here's the pic (somewhere in this thread) of me pulling the plastic trim above the steering column. It's retained simply by friction clips; no screws.

Once you have the trim pulled, you will see the brass screws for the Instrument Cluster. See the pic showing the exposed key cylinder for one of the brass screw locations.

you don't need to remove the steering column cover. you just need to pull off the plastic piece that holds the dimmer wheel, remove the 4 screws the hold the cluster in, and the 2 at the bottom of the cluster, and then tilt the cluster out.

On my 99 the FSM procedure is to remove the steering wheel and I had to. Couldn't do it otherwise. I guess I missed something.

The trick with removing the steering wheel is the folow the procedure that deals with disconnecting the airbag.

I wonder if this light could be replaced by an LED ?

I am also looking for an LED replacement??

does anyone know what size it is??

"smacking it" was in jest, i would assume

No, the light sometimes just has a loose connection. Whack the dash right above the gauge cluster with your palm. Worked several times on my 80, didn't work on the 100 tho. :frown:

You guys are really worrying about changing this bulb? I always thought having a burnt-out 'D' light was a mark of distinction, like grey hair or crows' feet.

Gear selection lamp is probably 90076-04003
All the ones on the bottom row and 3 centre top 83120-60020
Far outers up top and 2 top centre outers 90010-06029
