What have others done to prevent rust from developing on the door sills?

The paint had worn off from the previous owner, and started to develop some surface rust, I sanded down the area, treated with a metal-injected paint for durability, but it chipped off over the course of the winter, and we're back to rust.

Thinking about sanding back down and treating with a different kind of "tough" paint... just haven't decided what yet. Truck bed liner? Duracoat?

Anyone else successfully address this issue?

Oh man. I'd grind that whole section down to bare metal. Hit it with naval jelly to dissolve the rust, use some metal prep from POR, self etching primer, sand, paint to match. You need to get invasive with that whole section or you'll never fix it. You need to pull that door seal and treat from that seam weld all the way out. I'd address it ASAP. You can see rust under the bubbled section below the door seal. Was this car flooded?

I have very slight rust in this area as well on my 14 LX. It happened because the POS Weathertech mats pooled snow. When it melts, it runs out the lower left hand corner and sits in the door sill between the plastic guard and rubber weather-stripping. This area was perpetually wet during the winter in Alaska due to non-stop snow melt inside the car.

I pulled the plastic strip as my surface rust is very minimal compared to yours. I coated it in marine grease and the rust has not spread or escalated in severity in over a year. I reinstalled the plastic sill and monitor every few months. You can see blue marine grease coated on the metal behind the sill but I know its protected.

Would like to hear @2001LC thoughts as well since rust can form in this area on 100s too.

Try Fluid film for anti corrosion protection. Its cheap and really gets everywhere. Its also a very natural product made from sheeps wool oil (Lanolin).
Been using this stuff for years and will last a year then clean and reapply every year.
