Hey Guys,

YOU DON'T NEED WMA PERMITS

I Just got back from Clayton and learned a little about the WMA permit. We bought permits and then went to Jess' place (Indian Mounds Camp Ground) to check in and learned that we didn't need the WMA permits after all. The only area around clayton where you need the WMA permit is the Pushmataha reserve which is close to the river but we don't wheel there. In fact, you must stay on the improved roads in that area. Jess' place backs up to a 4000+ acre area owned by Ed ???? and this is where all the trails are that we are used to running; 3 stage, rock creek, timberline and others. Jess collects the money for Ed. I got a map from Jess and will bring to the meeting this month.

The best value is to camp at Indian Mounds and pay $10 per vehicle per day to wheel in the area. He has RV hookups as well, but the scenery is not as nice as the state park. If you don't camp at Indian Mounds, the daily fee is $15.00.

YOU DON'T NEED WMA PERMITS!!!!

Thanks,

James

The area where we wheel is private land and is no longer part of the WMA program.

For you guys who wheel all over southeast OK, yes having the permit is probably wise however, for a family of 5 wanting to go wheeling for the weekend, $125 can be the difference in going or not going.

There are other areas in OK where the WMA permit is required but in or around Clayton, the Pushmataha reserve is the only place it is required.

So specifically who was it that told you a permit was not required in the Honobia WMA? I think everyone understands that if you are not in the WMA you do not need the permit, but I personally don't see why $25 a year would be such a big deal to protect yourself from the ticket for inadvertently crossing into WMA property, which is easily done- especially at night. ;)

Furthermore, if having the absolute cheapest wheeling trip possible is the goal, why camp at a campground at all? Why no just camp on the upper K trail and never pay anything?

Personal preferences I guess... it's y'alls run, so makes no difference to me... just don't want the eagerness of trying to avoid paying result in expensive problems for anyone going.

Part of the K-trail area is WMA and does require permits. If anyone is going with us in July, you will need a permit for everyone in the vehicle. Yes, it is expensive and yes I will probably continue to complain about it. :D But I'm buying them anyway.

Jess at Indian Mounds said that there is no longer any WMA land that borders their property. This is somewhat substantiated by Kyle Johnson who is the wildlife biologist in the WMA program that manages the Hanobia Creek site. Kyle told me this morning that there were originally three paper company's who owned land and participated in the WMA program. Two of those have sold their land and therefore it is no longer in the program. Only one paper company land parcel is left. Kyle is mailing to me a map of the area so I will bring it to the next meeting. If you already have a map, the areas shaded green and blue have been sold. Only the area shaded yellow is still in the WMA program.

Jess is a pathological liar and a douchbag.

He is filling you full of crap. The land he collects money for is private, yes, but WMA land and other peoples private land intermigle throughout.

K trail is in the WMA in its entirety and if you want to go to Schoolbus hill, it is WMA.

Jess was almost solely responsible for us losing the rights to wheel on the property he now collects money for.

As a rule, my group won't do business with him unless we have to. I don't sneak in to the area (easy to do), but I try to spend my time and $$ at Green Acres, Feillings and the WMA. Jess Johnson is a fxxxtard.

Thanks for having the balls to say what needed to be said.

I didn't feel it was my place.

Screw that guy.

Last dealing I had with him....we went to recover a Cruiser that was on Lost Creek Trail. This trail is not on the land that this dickhead collects (and pockets) money for and the guys went in from K trail.

Well, the guys truck weighed about 6000# and the engine was dead with full hydro and none of us had a rig big enough to drag him out the top of the mountain, so we towed him down to the road that comes out of Indian Creek.

We towed him to Jess' locked gate and walked up to Jess' office to explain what happened.

He immediatly called the police and reported us as tresspassers. We TOLD him that we came on to his managed property only to get out of the trail with a broken vehicle.

Needless to say, when the police arrived, we were able to explain our position and we had to pay Jess his normal day fee just to get him to unlock the gate.

The guy is an a****** and he has done more harm that good for the Clayton area.

Trust me, the second you drove off, he laughed at "one more Dallas a****** headed for a ticket"

Spend your money at the State Park, or any of the wonderful Motel owners in town.

WOW....struck a nerve. Sorry.

At best, the WMA issue is a moving target. When I get the map from WMA (Kyle Johnson), I'll post up what I find.

Thanks,

James
