I have a 2yr old lab, great dog. The problem i have is that about a year ago he received an abrasion on his rear leg, So took him to the vet when it didn't heal, because he licks it constantly. They put him on antibotics, that didn't work alone, so next thing they did was antibotics and cone thing over his head, he just breaks the cone thing on his head so that does not help. I'm trying to deter him from licking it but running out of ideas. He now weres a muzzle (open nose) and I wrap his foot, I watch him as much as i can, but he stills finds away to lick it. I don't want to go the vet anymore because I just can't afford the vet bills at this time. I need some ideas because i don't a 7yr old lab that has the same abrasion from when he was 1. thanks

I dunno... maybe try wrapping it and put something really nasty smelling or some hot sauce on the outside of the wrap.

When you mean cast, do mean go to the vet and have it done, or can you make your own.

Tried tabasco, i don't know if i want to step up to dave insanity sauce or not.

i mean go to another vet and suggest a cast, well-ventilated --

Any idea on the cost of this, and your right the tabasco is cruel, but i was willing to try anything, not sure what i'm doing with the muzzle is not cruel either, but i'm just going nuts about this.

The next time the dog licks the wound - kick it in the head - it wil get the point and stop - basically associate the licking with head pain. With a lab it may take a couple of times of course.

Regards

What do you mean by "abrasion"? How did the animal receive the abrasion, where exactly is it located.

A dogs natural response to a wound is to lick it, and you'll not deter him from it.

Are you saying this dog has an "open wound" a full year later?

Sounds much more like a "hot spot" to me.

Geeeez, sounds simple ---- a stronger satellite.

He received it chuckar hunting, its just above the rear foot on the front side. Not exactly sure what a hot spot is, but either way when i keep him from licking it for a day or so, it looks like it is getting better, but then he licks it with out my knowledge and I go back to were i started.

Some reading this post are hoping you are kidding about this.

Go to the pet store and buy ba spray called BITTER APPLE. this stuff tastes so nasty he wont dare lick it. if you spray it around the wound (not in it) it should do the trick

bitter apple will be tasty for this dog, if he wants to get to that wound --

-- what are you feeding him? are you sure it's not allergies also?

Try Sulfodene. It's a medicated lotion with anti-bacterial and anti-histamine properties, so it will make it feel better for the animal, and, it purportedly tastes awful, so if he does lick it, he probably won't continue.

Available over the counter at pet stores.

He was on petagrie, but switched to iams for his coat.

I dont know, but my pit loved kitty treats, I tried el yucateca (habanero sauce) she still ate the crap, drank all the water in her bowl and the toilets, then pissed all over the house. Bitter cured of the habit.
