Doesn't $300 sound high for frame sandblasting?

Well, I guess being in NW Georgia may be a plus because I found a guy who charges $110 an hour to sandblast and he said a frame typically takes him an hour and a half but usually runs no more then $200. I saw his work and he did a great job on some of the stuff in his shed awaiting pickup. So I guess it is market specific. Said if I call and make an appointment, I can drop it off and pick it up the following day.:cheers:

About a month ago a mobile sandblasting company came to my house (charging $80.00 per hour). Within two hours, he completely finished the frame, axle(s), body,front fenders,skid plates,front bumper,and a few other misc.parts. $160.00 even. Another shop in town charges $65.00 oer hor in there booth. But this company was mobile so i went with them. $300.00 sounds pretty high to me. Go to harber frieght, buy a pressurized blaster for $80.00, buy 7-10 bags of 30# sand for $6.00 a bag, then pay yourself to do the job and keep the equipment.
 
This is an old thread of mine and I am surprised it still has legs. I have a pressure blaster (50lbs I think) from HF and it works ok for small stuff. In truth, it makes such a freaking mess around the yard, that I think it is worth having someone do it for me. But....honestly $300 hurts. I am going to keep my eyes open for a mobile unit, or someother opportunity that presents itself.

I guess for those folks living in big cities there is more competition for blasting large auto and machine parts. Here...I think this local guy has a lock on the market.

What are some other solutions folks have worked out to beg borrow or steal some sandblasting opportunities???
 
there is a guy in Hinesburg who does mobile blasting, has a sign on his front yard on 116. No idea about his skills, but I drive by there daily and could get a number for you.

Seriously......that number would be great to have. If I ever got my sheeet together, it might be worthwhile to get a load of stuff to one location (Like Mike's house), and have the guy blast away. Might be cheaper too....
 
pretty pricey

My regular powdercoater does the blasting and coating for $385.00 :) So just the blasting seems a little high?

Anyone know how a frame is coated at the Factory ie: seems like I recall they dip it in a phosphate solution prior to painting?

Or, conversely, once stripped, how would one make a frame esssentially rust-proof, prior to painting? One poster mentioned galvanizing, sounds good, just don't know how many companies do that??

Also, is there any media that is "easier" on the microscopic surface layer of the steel than another ie: like plastic pellets, C02, or doesn't it matter with a steel frame? (I'm thinking of aircraft aluminum, my "frame" of reference, and of course, you have to be very careful not to harm the skin, different beast, I know)

Any frame-stripping gurus out there?

If you can find a place that uses aluminum oxide as a media, that would be great. Very expensive for the do it yourselfer , but if you can find a place that has a reclaimer machine in place-go4it. Alum. Ox. pits the steel and leaves tiny particles of it on the frame thus inhibiting rust even further.

i thought I mentioned this on another thread, maybe not.

forgot-most frames are "e-coated" in the plant. Not sure what that is, got that info from my gear head father in law.
