Doesn't $300 sound high for frame sandblasting?

I called a local shop (new) and was a bit surprised by the price to descale a frame with garnet abrasive. Doing the axles would be extra. I thought this was cheaper.

AZ price

I paid $130 for the frame, and the price quoted was $50 for each axle. And after I suggested an extra $50, I got same day (3 hr actually) turn around on it instead of the 2 week wait.

That is about what I was quoted to sand blast the frame of my '78 FJ 40. He first quoted $350, but dropped to $300 when I told him I would have cash. I thought it was high and have not had the frame blasted yet.

I would not even start my compressor for less than $250. What you have to understand is the cost of all the equipment to do these "small jobs". Go and rent everything and then tell me when you hit that $300 mark....;)

Gee I'm sorry that you guys pay so much for sand blasting $125.00 is the price that I got and his work is recomended.

300 isn't awful.

I sandblasted my doors(all 6 pieces) on my 60. I used 100% recycled glass. I rented the blaster, but had a decent compressor at work to use. I did it outside and could not re-use any sand. So basically as I sprayed it I lost it. The big thing in keeping cost low is to be able to re-use the sand. So you need a containment set up. Either in a tent or clean shop.

I used 17 bags of sand at 11 bucks each. Got my blaster for 30 bucks a day. Took 2 weekends.

So looking back I would have paid 300 bucks to get a large job done and out of the way.

Nice thing when you do it your self is being able to take your time and get the rust completely out of the skin/frame.

I notice in the pic above the body/tub is obviously off the frame. Do you think cost would go up for blasting a frame that has the body on it? And can they still do a decent job with it on the frame? Thanks.

blasting a frame that is still on is a situation where to many things can go wrong. I would not attempt it myself. Think of all of the sensitive areas.... That could get abrasive inside. When I blasted my frame I put it on 55gal drums, and blasted it also removing some undercoat with silica no prob. As far as doing a good job. I am assuming a small fraction of these members know what they are doing with this application to be proficient at it. I think there is a guy in W.V that would agree with me.

I did my axles as well with TONS of duct tape covering the ends, and the drive shaft area.

yea its a bitch, ya got to know what gets hurt, must know your eguiment, such as valves and air pressure, along with what materials you are using. and when the body is on the frame so much not gets done that trully needs it.

I actually finally found the pic I wanted to put up here. The PROPER way to begin frame prep work.
