As I am heading towards western Africa again with my 2016 LC200 4,6 V8 petrol I wondered if any of you had installed fuel pre-filters? Quality of petrol especially in Mauritania or Guinea may be inferior, there may be contamination, etc. I wouldn't like to kill the engine and get stranded there ;-)

Please share your experience and ideas.

I’ve got one for my LRA to my main tank. It’s an in line filter made by Holley. The make several variants depending on how fine a media you want to use. A smarter and more experienced guy than me @Taco2Cruiser recommended one iirc and he’s used them before in foreign lands where fuel quality is suspect. The idea is that you pour the swill into the aux tank and then filter it into your main. HTH.

And post a trip report thread!

Sometimes the make magic !
They add water to fuel in order to make more money .
Happened to me and my girlfriend many years ago in Algeria .
But can happen anywhere in Africa .
A second fuel filter is most advised.
On my 78 diesel I have 2 .
For gasoline there should be a standard solution from Toyota .

Honestly, the only prefilter I have used for unleaded fuel world wide is a doubled up coffee filter stuck in my fuel funnel. Anything not from a well known source goes through that form of filter. Cheap and easily sourced.

I use cheese cloth in a funnel to get rid of any water in the fuel, when traveling to such places.

On my diesel it has a water separator filter, but not on my gas/petrol.

These work also:
