Does anyone know how wide the stock 15" chrome wheels are?

Below is a pictures of the wheels I have on my 1984 BJ60. I'm very close to getting tires - in the next few days. If I get the 31x10.5 tires, I want to be sure the rim is wide enough. I could always get the 30x9.5 instead (or if I have to, the stock 235's). If anyone knows the width of these rims, that would be great! :D

PS: I'm about 99% certain I'm going for the LT rated Kumho Road Venture KL78. Good price, and from what I can tell from the short period of time my father's had his, and the limited amount of snow around here, those tires seem great. My dad's got the LT235/75R15 on his Sonoma 4x4).

I ran 10.5 on stocks for a few years...worked great.

Stock rim is 6.5 (I think)

Yeah, you will be fine.
I am running 32/11 MTR on my stockers.
Not ideal but its not bad.

stock fj60/2 rims...........6" wide

I too have decided to go with the KL-78 in 31's but tire rack has
them back ordered and i am not able to get them from them. Where
are you getting yours from? or going to a local store that has them
in stock?

thx

I think that's a good choice too. I'm getting my tires from a local tire shop. By the time I figured in shipping, duty (I'm in Canada), installation, etc, it was almost the same price as the local tire shop. The guy at the tire shop told me the Kumho's would need to be ordered in, but he didn't check as to how long it would take. I hope it won't be too long! If not, Costco has a good deal on BFG AT KO's which was my second choice.

Thanks, I'll take a look. I won't be able to see the truck in daylight for a few days, but will see if it's stamped (hopefully it's on the outside of the the rim somewhere that's easy to see).

That's good. I just checked the specs on the Kumho KL78's. The 235/65R15's are intended to go on rims 6-8". Even the 30" tires would just make it, they need a rim between 6.5" to 8.5" but the 31" tires are supposed to have a rim between 7-9"

Here's the link incase anyone wants to see the other specs or sizes: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Kumho&model=Road+Venture+AT+KL-78&tirePageLocQty=

Doesnt matter how tall the tire is just how wide the tire is...

You could run 40s on a 7inch rim if they were only a 1050..

Yeah, I got that part, thanks. That makes sense, but I was referring to how wide the the tire is and how wide the rim is. On the Tire Rack website, it shows that:

LT235/75R15 section width is 9.2" and should be on a rim 6" to 8" wide
30x9.5SR15 section width is 9.5" and should be on a rim 6.5" to 8.5" wide
31x10.5SR15 section width is 10.5" and should be on a rim 7" to 9" wide

(got info from http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Kumho&model=Road+Venture+AT+KL-78&tirePageLocQty= )

If the stock rims are 6" or 6.5" wide, I should be OK with the stock tire size or possibly the 30" tires, but according to the specifcations, the rim would not be wide enough for the 31 inch tire (since it's 10.5 inches wide and requires a rim between 7" and 9" wide). Although, it sounds like others here have done it without problems. But, should I ever have a warranty claim, they might say my warranty is void due to the rim not being wide enough (albeit only by a half inch or an inch).

The rims are 6" wide.

As far as tire width is concerned the 10.5" will work fine on the factory rims. I run 33x10.5 BFG muds with zero problems.

I had 31x10.5's on my y62 b/f the lift and stuff they worked wonderful. I would not go any smaller thats for sure!

Here is a picture of the stamping on a stock rim (this one was mfg'd 10/81). The stamp mark is oon the inside part of the rim.

Thanks for all the info everyone! I have the wheels off now, but don't see anything stamped on them (although the inner part is quite nasty looking and corroded, unless "inside" part of the rim means the part covered by the tire).

Going by what several of you have said, the stock rim is 6" (which is slightly narrower than what is recommended for the 31x10.5" tires) but many of you have put tires on that are that wide and had no problems. Sounds like it's not worth worrying about, so I won't worry about that when buying the tires. Right now we're working on the brakes so it can pass the inspection. Oddly enough, they let the tires pass that are on the truck now, but I'm still going to get new tires anyways.

i know youve prolly already gone and done whatever... but i measured mine, theyre 7.5 inches, and i run a 12.5 inch tire with no problem... everyone always has a small heart attack when i say that (and when i tell um its also a 33 inch tall tire on stock suspension) but trust me, it works fine...

That's great to hear, thanks! I'd really like to get the 31's if possible, so it's nice to hear of several people who had put that size or bigger, on stock rims. Right now we're fixing the brakes so the truck can pass an inspection, then I'll be getting the tires right after that.
