Does a 1GR-FE fit into a 1987 HZJ75?

We think about retrofitting this engine into this 75. But we are not sure it will fit under the smaller bonnet.
Are there any succesfull stories?

Hey JGG, they are a pretty good engine. Later 70 series landcruisers are also available from factory with the 1GR engine in it GRJ79 4.0L Petrol Manual Transmission W/O Winch - https://car2point.com/product/grj79-4-0l-petrol-manual-transmission-w-o-winch/
It is called a GRJ79
I think from a certain year the 70 series has a wider chassis rail and different fenders and bonnet to match. (this later shape accepts the V6 no problems at all)

I have owned two different vehicles with the 1GR, and have also considered it as an engine conversion in my own FJ73. The only real downside in my opinion is the Dual VVT-i variant is the only real one worth doing as it makes just that little more power and torque where its needed. Also the fuel economy is not too fantastic especially if high octane (premium) is what it likes to drink.

I havent been through this entire thread but may help you out:
2018 GCC Spec GRJ79 LX build - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/2018-gcc-spec-grj79-lx-build.1234906/

I know, but this is with the bigger nose. So we can't just rely on the fact that it has worked in later models.

Well, we would upgrade from the 1985 diesel to the 1GR-FE (and drive it on LPG (Propane and Butane))

But the problem seems to be that nobody knows if the 1GR will fit :)
I had hoped there where some more experience stories what would fit in the smaller nose.

Hello,

I may be stating the obvious here.

Trucks built after 2007 have the front frame rails separated some 100 mm to accommodate the 1GR and 1VD engines. I understand these engines are too wide for the frame spacing of pre-2007 trucks, but I might be wrong.

However, I remember reading that some Australian users managed to install gasoline/petrol V8 engines in pre-1999 trucks with the narrow nose. Details are in this forum's threads.

It would not hurt to take some measurements and check.

I have put big blocks and big bodied GM 6.5 diesel V8's in 75 series' so a relatively small V6 should be doable, even if it requires the motor to sit up high. Numbers on them are not too fantastic though, so a lot of effort for not too wonderful gain. You know the 1FZ will fit and was a factory fitted option, might be better suited with its torque curve.

I thought the frame rails were widened to fit the 1VD (V8 diesel) and not the 1GR (V6 petrol), the latter being more of an "afterthought" primarily for the GCC market. Smaller engine might not necessarily mean more space, though - there is basically no space (ie even less than with 1VD) with the new 1GR option despite it being a significantly smaller engine...

i dont know anyone who's put a GR in a narrow nose, but a UZ fits quite nicely so why not?
