Just started doing this two days ago. Only about say, 37% of the time i will turn the key to start the truck, have a slight pause (maybe 2 seconds) and then the motor turns over. It has never done this before. Usually, i turn the key and the motor immediatly turns over. Now i'm getting a hesitation and it only does it occasionally. I think my starter is about to go south.

THoughts, opinions?

Your starter is not going south. You simply need new contacts in the starter. About $25 from Cdan. or add a bit more and also replace the plunger at the same time. I've done it both ways and recommend the plunger be replaced at the same time.

Also, be advised your starter may stick on as the contacts may "grab" the plunger as they have deep dents in them from wear. If/When this happens, you'll immediately need to disconnect the battery cable (positive) and you may be unable to drive the truck from that moment on. I have a thread here from the last few days as this ironically happened to me literally as I'm waiting for parts arrival. Mine never gave any warning and I was simply doing it for maintenance. With yours, it's well into the danger zone and you're playing with fire.

THanks for the heads-up Doug. I remember reading a thread a while back about that happening. I'll do a search, but are the contacts hard to replace? I'll also look at my FSM tonight.

One other thing, sorry to sound like stuck in GA, but, what is the plunger? Is the plunger the gear that moves onto the flywheel and starts the motor and then moves away fromt he flywheel after it's started? I know about this gear from fixing lawnmowers.

I belive you are referring to the 'bendix" gear. The plunger moves from the electrical field in the starting solenoid, and makes a connection to the contacts via a washer.

I recall there being information in the FSM for the starter.
But you'll also find info here (search archives) and on the tech section in www.sleeoffroad.com.

Does this thread have anything to do with the other one about going south?
