:flipoff2: Yeah, I do it.
Learn to drive a stick and it must have crossed over.
I also like to push the buttons. Thats why they are there right. To be pushed.
Especially like to push the OD button to down shift onto an off-ramp.
Save on brakes  Kill the trans
Seriously the only way to hurt that think is slap it into D while still rolling back
Does idle smoother in N at lights.
I do not put it into P at lights. If some A__ Hole rear ended you that would hurt the trans.
My disfu_ktional .02.

I shift to N at long lights in real cold weather, especially when the lights are on because the higher idle speed helps keep the battery charged a little better. I also do it in hot weather to get cooler air out of the AC. Rest of the time I leave it in D.

I don't generally shift to Park, cause the flash of the backup lights tends to scare the crap out of folks in small cars behind me. ;)

I can see the benefit of putting it into N. My 80 has a slight but noticible vibration when stopped at a light, when in neutral it goes away. I wonder if the idle is set just a tad high.

One thing to keep in mind... If you are in neutral you probably still have your foot on the brakes, if it is in park you probably don't, but then you wouldn't have your brake lights on for other mall haired, cell phone yapping drivers to notice. Just a safety concern.

If waiting for short periods I may leave it in drive but if the lights are going to be longer I usually put it into neutral. I once read that prolonged waiting in gear is unhealthy as the clutch bands become worn. I also on country roads use the gear box in a manual mode using the box for deceleration and to be in a more appropriate gear for bends, hazards and when descending hills, I may even go into first on very steep winding docents. I prefer to have good control over the vehicle as my driving style is a bit spirited.

I would think that generally speaking, futzing around with the AT at a stop light is not a good idea on the (remote) chance that you'd end up in R by accident and do a job on the guy behind you... Especially nasty if you had to maneuver and go back a bit in R and forget it's there...

As far as P is concerned, forget that, puts the whole weight of the truck on a little metal paw... Crazy...

Somewhere there are some FJ40 guys laughing at how :princess: this thread is.

Never did on my cruiser but used to do it on other vehicles...Anyway I stopped doing that ever since I tried to clutch (guess which pedal) an AT Cressida exiting a highway at 55MPH (had been playing much with the shifter - thus forgetting that I was not driving a manual, which I have a habit of quickly depress the clutch & flip the stick on exit ramps). Scared the crap out of myself & fiance' at the moment; also lucky that I did not lose control (thanks to ABS) & no one hit us from behind.

Frank.

Hey TX TLC guy its a phrase. Ya know like who in the world would do that. Just proving a point big nut so relax your a junior too so you don't have much say in shutting anyone down. But maybe next time!

On a console shifter like the 80 I typically shift out of D at stop lights to take the load off the motor which makes it idle a little better, atleast it feels that way to me.

You can shift between D and N at anyspeed without depressing the button on the side of the shifter you can not however do the same thing to put it in reverse. Atleast I am 99% sure about this so as long as you refrain from shifting as you would from R to D, when shifting from D to N or visa versa you should be ok.

I like to shift into 1 at the light and stand on the gas and brakes until the light turns green...

Graspin at straws for a topic or what???
Cheers,
Sean
