DIY Roofrack Accesories

Have had my roof rack for 6 months and had been wanting to add a AX / Shovel mount. I couldn't see forking over the $60-$75 warrior wanted. Went to home depot got some 3" x 3/8" bolts, fence hardware, washers and fly nut. Total cost was less than $5.00. Might work for a jack as well. Plan on painting them black soon.

Thanks guys for $5.00 It works perfect. It had two holes I only used one. You could easily drill one or weld a plate with one.

Not yet got the AX today going to mount that then take her out next weekend. I'll let you guys know.

What is the fence hardware called specifically? The silver piece which holds the axe in place, might need to do this as well

after looking at your pic, u could use conduit strap/hold downs... They are one sided and you can get them in different sizes... something like this... 3#1 - 3#2/0 1-Hole Service Entrance Cable Straps (10-Pack)-26218 at The Home Depot

This is the piece I used. All I did was use a longer bolt. Works perfect.

If there is enough diameter in the bolt, you might think about drilling a small hole through the bolt. Then you could use a luggage lock to deter someone from stealing your shovel. It would also serve as a way to prevent the wing nut from loosening and dropping you shovel on the freeway.

Another solution would be to use a nylok wing nut. but these are very difficult to take on and off by hand. You might need a torque-enhancing tool of some sort.

Agreed, while this is a nice $50 mod, the security of the tools would be my main issue.. Maybe drill extra holes in the non-used sides and run a cable lock through it?
