I finally had some cash to put into a couple mods on my LX. Limited finances, but enough to make things happen. My wife and I decided that the very first the we should do after buying the rig was to put a rack and tent on top. This makes sense because we aren't doing anything too crazy yet. Nothing that this beast can't handle stock.
I never realized just how quickly the money starts piling up when just trying to put a roof rack on your vehicle. It's the rack, the mounting equipment, is it powder coated?, shipping, etc. Etc. Another thing to look at was customer service and accessibility. For me, I feel like a business should be easy to deal with and easily accessible Monday thru Friday for questions or concerns I might have. This is our investment after all.
We had a certain type of rack we were looking for. Something wide, at least 52" and something long, 90". We looked at baja racks. They were easy to get ahold of and willing to help, but production of the rack I was seeking was at least 3 weeks out and was over a G after shipping.
I was real close to buying a rack from Tim at Gamiviti because that type of rack was exactly what we were looking for. He was extremely helpful and was willing to customize the rack however I wanted. But, man those pieces of steel and the labor to slap them of really starts adding up. Also, it would be super cool if Gamiviti had a business line to throw ideas around. I'm not great at emails and checking emails. So, gamiviti has the almost perfect rack and willingness to customize, but after shipping, and the mounts, and knowing that I'm gonna have to paint or powder coat this thing after shipping, got my wife and I thinking. We almost did a JMOOSE and after researching that, I wouldn't have done it, unless I could have added numerous welds and more aluminum. And I just couldn't bring myself to go too MAD MAX on the ride. No offense to anyone with the moosey.
One night, she came up with the bright idea of calling around and see if anyone can do it locally. LIGHTBULB.
The next morning I went down to a local fabrication shop that doesn't specialize in 4x4 racks or bumpers, and I showed the what I wanted. These guys were more than happy to whip this thing out. I paid these guys $400 dollars and they finished my rack before they closed that day. HOLY SH@t. Are you kidding me?!

I have to give HUGE PROPS to GAMIVITI for having such a great rack design. Although, this one is a little more stout with 1.5" steel. It weighs in at 80 lbs. 92"X 52". I did have to have some welds on the mounting plates gone over because as you can see in the pics they just spot welded them on. They ended up going over the length of the plates and filling any gaps. No tabs or anything fancy yet. Just a place to put our tent. I did end up buying Tim's mounting hardware. It's the least I could do. Plus, when other rack companies are turning me away and telling me to use GAMIVITI MOUNTS, that's gotta say something. So, after the rack($400), the mounts($130)", mounting hardware($20), and the HERCULINER($80 that's right I said it!) I got the job done for $630.00. The herculiner is pretty badass too. Lots of scuffing and priming and scuffing, and this stuff is plastered to the rack. With a paint mixer and a paint brush, I was able to do a real good job. It looks like it's sprayed on. Now I just have to mount it up, and throw this 200 lb TEPUI Kukenam ruggedized XL on top and we'll be fishing in no time.
Tepui is another company that is easily accessible and well put together. The tent we received looks to be of amazing quality and craftsmanship.

So long story not short at all, if you are on a budget and need to get some steel work done, sometimes you gotta look at the places closest to you. Look at places that are reputable. And no offense to anybody, but sometimes A NAME is attached to the price tag.
Here's a couple pics of the work and I will also post the finished product.
If you made it to here, thanks for reading.

Cool :) some on here have actually bought an atv/lawn mower ramp at harbor freight and modded it as a roof rack. Aluminum, 1500 lbs rated. Yeah. Cheap, cool.

Funny thing Bean, I actually bought a bi fold ramp online because I was that close to doing the JMOOSE project, but my buddy talked me out of it. I'm actually glad he did. Now I just have to return it or craigslist it.
Looks great. I don't know much about racks, does it attach at the existing roof rack holes with the towers?
yeah, I had the welders weld on some plates to the rack where the stock mounting points are. Then I just installed the new mounts and lined up the rack and drilled the hole that I needed to bolt it down.

I actually have a couple updated photos of the rack installed today. It's a simple design and I'm psyched on the finished product. Tomorrow the tent is going on. I can't wait. It's like Christmas! Haha!

Looks great, I may have to look into doing something like that down the road. I've got a Rola on mine now that's attached to the factory rack...I like the looks of it, but the weight capacity is limited by the factory rack.

I was thinking about adding to the factory rack at I have, but like you said, they are limited. 175 lbs I think? I'm not how much weight I could load onto this one, but I did have to test the product today by climbing up there and jumping around a bit. It felt real solid. I even walked out onto the front where there is no support with only minimal flex.

Hey nice work man, looking good! Not sure I'm worthy of all the praise up above but heck, I'm glad I was able to help.. :)

How's the wind noise? You going to do a fairing?
Haha!! That is funny you asked about the wind noise. Went to test drive tonight and grab a bite to eat and holy s*** it was insane! It wasn't so much wind noise, more like harmonics. Can't quite explain the sound, but if I had to try, I would ask you to imagine an enormous wine glass. A wine glass big enough to skateboard in. Now, imagine a giant wet finger pressing against the lip of the glass spinning around in circles, Creating a sound that penetrated the core of your body.

Anyways, yeah dude. I definitely need a wind fairing. The wind must have been bad on the way to town, because on the way back, the sound was almost non existent. Weird. I was expecting an added whooshing sound, but I got the constant whoooooo without the shhhhhh. Haha!

I get the same sound when I don't have my RTT mounted. I was gonna try some bungee cords to disturb the air (long ways).

I was thinking that the tent would help disturb the air enough to stop this giant Tibetan singing bowl on top of my roof. After I get out of class, Im going to try and round up a couple folks to help me with this tent. Beer bribery should do. I will post back and let you know if I still have an Ashram on top of Mt. Lexus.

We finished putting on the tent yesterday. Man, that was pretty damn time consuming the first time. The instruction booklet wasn't amazing. There's video on how to do everything step-by-step from TEPUI, Bbut we could not find one single video or instruction manual on how to properly attach the annex, which we figured out, but man! And how is everyone packing there annex?! Is there a special trick anyone has or am I just supposed to just fold it back up with the latter and neatly pile it on top of the repacked tent. It's confusing.

Well here's a few pics of the new TEPUI.

Oh and I almost forgot....there is almost 0 wind noise. I'm not sure how I got away with that, maybe I just tested it out on a good day. I'm still going to fabricate a fairing that will direct air flow up and over that wall on my roof.

Is that paint already rubbing off of the rack?

my annex has a little stuff sack it goes into, then I shove that into one of my drawers. It's not often it comes out though, usually don't bother with it. I have seen a lot of RTT cover zippers fail, so I try to limit folding extra stuff up there, like bedding, pillows, etc. Hopefully your Tepui is good quality- sure looks it from the pics!

And that's sweet on the wind- it's possible a hood bug deflector would also have influence? You're just trying to disrupt the aerodynamics so a wave doesn't smack right on the edge of the rack- by adding the tent you've shifted the node of the curve, so to speak.

@LX101North, rack looks great! What are the dimensions you used? It looks larger than the Gamivitis.
