Is there any way to do a homemade "recurve" to a stock distributor after a desmog? I can't get a hold of Jim C. and I know of no place around here that can do it for me. I just want to drive my 60 without it pinging.

You have to talk to Jim. He has the Sun Machine for doing the recurve right. Mine runs great with this set-up.

SOR sells non-USA OEM Toyota distributors, so I'm guessing you could get one through Cruiserdan. Pricey, but possible.

Are those curved differently? for lack of smog equip?

Yes, but they are points distributors.

It makes more sense to get the best--A sealed, fully electronic, OEM Toyota distributor with bearings rather than bushings on the shaft. I would hold out for getting the FJ60 distributor recurved. Fully rebuilt and recurved was about $100. That's a bargin. Jim can get busy but it will be worth your wait. Who knows, maybe he takes a summer vacation too....

Hey Drew,

Can you elaborate on points distributors? I've wondered about that one for a while. Are they not fully electronic?

Thanks.

Points distributors have old fashioned contact points. They work just fine and are easy to field maintain. But..The points can wear, they need to be periodically replaced. As they wear, the dwell varies and throws off the ignition. The small body distributors also use bushings to support the shaft which will wear and cause the timing to be unstable.

I think the 60 series distributors make the most sense, but for sure, the points set up would work too.

Great, thanks for the explanation. Still trying to learn the ins and outs of these trucks, and what the differences are.

Yeah, I definitely want to have the Stock dizzy recurved. That thing is a champ. I have sat in headlight deep water with it for 10 minutes without it failing me. Does anyone know of ANY other shops that have done this? Thanks

Oh, and would a shop that builds race motors be able to do something like this?
