Hi all,

I am retrofitting a factory rear auxiliary fuel tank and dash gauge to my poor man's model, but I'm a bit lost in terms of wiring to the sender. The factory loom didn't have everything in place to just plug and play, so I'm just wiring it up to work off its own circuit (ignition powered). I'm running a pollack fuel solenoid with its own switch, so i just want the gauge to read from the sender whenever ignition is on.

I've read the workshop manuals, and I think I have deciphered the gauge wiring but I'm not sure how to wire the sender. I'm talking about this type of gauge...

here's the back of the gauge, according to my interpretation of the EWD these are the wire designations, fuel+ being that routed to the solenoid (which I won't be using), but i can't confirm this is correct as i haven't yet got anything to work. BTW... 12v to any of the 3 coloured wires on the gauge (with white wire grounded) allows the light to come on when you press the button.

so my dilemma is how i should be wiring the tank sender to the gauge, the sender just has two wires, a yellow-red and a black-white. I've run these two wires (with 14AWG) up into the cab to the back of the gauge so I can wire it how ever it needs to be.

i guessed that the yellow-red from the sender would go to the yellow-blue you see on my gauge and ground the black-white wire, but it didn't work. I played around a bit but no luck. i can't rule out faulty sender or gauge, nor do i know if there's anything else in the factory loom (like resistors) that I'm forgetting, but any hints on how it should be wired up will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

I refer to electrical components as do-dads and do-hickeys so I can't help you but some of these smart guys will probably chime in shortly. :D

Is your sender a factory sender? It must match your factory gauge as far as the ohms rating. That is a nice looking gauge, what model cruiser is it from?

I have 75 series sub tank fuel gauge and bracket but not plastic Facia or dash cover somewhere in the shed you can have if you want, then if you blow your first one up you have a spare.

I got the tank/sender from a petrol 70 here in Peru, not exactly sure of the lineage but i think it was an 88 FJ70. The gauge is from a HZJ75, I do actually have a second gauge as well, also from a HZJ75 I think, I picked them both up at different aussie wreckers. Maybe there's a difference between the petrol and diesel sender? I was hoping that wouldn't matter :bang:... if the ohms are different I can pick up a new diesel sender from Toyota, but regardless I'll still don't know if I'm wiring it correctly the way I'm doing it.

This is actually turning into quite the saga for me... one of the gauges i actually got from a wrecked 75 complete with tank/brackets/sender/solenoid the day before i last flew out of OZ, but the wrecker who'd promised to pull out the big bits and then cleanup and paint all the parts, ended up shipping them over to me completely dirty and they got seized by peruvian customs cause you can't import used parts (but refurbished yes)... so lots of money down the drain so far!

Hello,

I got this from the FSM. A wiring diagram for the ancillary fuel tank (or fuel sub-tank, as the manual calls it. ;))

It applies to the HZJ75 series but at least shows how to set it up. I understand yours is an HZJ78; it should not be very different.

Hope this helps.

thanks Juan, your a legend. that should help me sort out the wiring.

my only remaining dilemma is to source the right sender for the two gauges I have. the exact models my sender and gauges come from is still only a guess, but the part number clearly stamped on the dash gauge comes up as a blank :( 83330-90K00. if I could certify which model its from I could be sure I was ordering the right sender (i still don't know whether the sender's dodgy or not, or whether it would have the same ohm output, but its old and I will replace with a new one anyway). I have no idea why the part number doesn't register in the system when doing a Parts cross-reference search, it's never happened to me before.

I got into the proper toyota database (not Toyodiy) at my mates authorized workshop and found the part numbers, the part number I mentioned above was the gauge itself that isn't sold separately, which is why it doesn't register. So below are the matching part numbers if anyone wants to do this themselves when adding a toyota auxiliary tank.

the complete meter assembly shown in the photos above:

83290D METER ASSY, ACCESSORY
83290-90K05

the sender to match:

83320 GAGE ASSY, FUEL SENDER
83320-69255 SUB TANK

I should also add that the meter assembly bolts straight onto any 70's dash without any dramas.

when i get it all up and running I'll post up to confirm everything.

The sender unites in the frount and back tank have the same ohms reading . Instead of the second gauge i use a relay to swich senders on the one gauge. Petrol and diesel are the same. You can use a rear sender in the frount, you just bend the float arm to miss the baffle. If you still need help with the wiring i will have a look at one .

thanks, it'll take a month for my new sender to arrive to get the the final wiring. From what your saying the one I have should have worked, so I can assume its definitely belly up.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

How did this turn out ?

Did you use OEM solenoids 777106 0190 and 777206 0150 ?

Despite having all the parts, in the end I changed my mind... the OEM fuel gauge took up too much space in my dash extension, and too cut a long story short, I'm using a blue sea vsm 422 for many things in the same footprint. And instead of the pollack solenoid I had, I also changed my mind and got the OEM solenoids and switch.
