If you've not yet watched this series, it shows that both do very well on the trails. Granted the 100 was often hobbled by the Xventrure trailer, there were a few times that the Taco did surprisingly well.

If the Taco ever becomes a Hilux over here, I'd be all for a diesel, 4-door, short box, 6 speed build. As long as I can get three across in the back everything else is gear or dog and can be in the bed. Until then the 100 is my weapon of choice.

Yup ive seen that series, good stuff. and that is exactly what i may do one day hopefully! even if they put a diesel in the tacoma it would be great!

100...weapon of choice ! nice!

Go 35's! You will never regret it, and with your budget just gear it and your problems are gone. If you have the Taco for the fam than dont limit the Landcruiser with trivial junk like 'Im gonna lose 2mpg... or whatever... Your gonna go over way more stuff easier and ride much better with 35"s. I know because Ive gone from 35"s to 33's and hated it... diffs hitting everything, can feel every bump in the road... plus when you air down you will only have 33"equivalent clearance anyway... If you are dedicating one build for an adventure rig go all the way and smile when it works way better on the trail. Working good on the trail is way more important than what it does on the road. It will ALWAYS run down the road just fine... IMHO.

As for the Taco going anywere... ANY vehicle can be built to do what you want and a certain $$... but stating that a stock truck will go anywhere is silly because its just not true. Throw lockers tires gears and armor, now you will pretty much go anywhere. But that goes for almost any truck. I have '98 SAS taco locked geared and triple cased, I would say it holds its own, but it wont go anywhere. Its only on 35"s. Short wheelbases are better for some things, longer are better for others. Super long wheelbase (double cab long box) sucks for most trails so good choice on building the 100.

My buddy bought a taco. We drove around the island going down anything that looked close to a trail just to see what his first 4x4 could do. We got stuck once when the rear diff hit. A little rock stacking and we were on our way. "A stock single cab 2004 Tacoma goes anywhere on Maui that isn't gated off" is a more accurate statement. Sorry I said "anywhere." I meant it for my particular location.

Yes they are very capable trucks, especially with the rear elocker... better offroad than most people will ever need. The places i like to go they would not make it ten feet down the trail.. well they might make it down. All the gates really suck around here too... but if you have the right truck you dont need to go through the gate :D:cheers:
