Does anyone know how much gear oil the differentials need with air lockers installed compared to oem open diff's?

I just had air lockers and did the first fluid change a while back. I can't remember how much oil I used but it was very close to stock, within 5%. I always have extra gear oil around so just fill them up.

Huh, last time I did a drain and fill it seems like I had a lot more left over than I expected going off the oem specs.

Did a complete drain and fill on both my diffs and the t-case for the 2nd time.

Both times I have only used approximately 7 quarts to fill all 3, that's with arb air lockers front and rear and a part time kit in the t-case.

I'm in the process of installing them, I'll look at the instructions tonight and tell you what they say.

All righty, Page 34 of the instructions, and I quote,
"Refill the differential until level with the filler hole."

Real useful, that. Oh well.

Do the instructions say anything about what kind of gear oil to use?

I have always used lucas gear oil but I also find myself worried that maybe arb specs a special kind of oil or something.

Nope. I'm going with a synthetic as sold by Nitro as I'm using their gears.

Arb recommends a gear oil without any LSD additives as the additives can wear the seals over time. I use regular 80w-90 with no LSD additives.

Hmmmm, I read this online but every single gear oil I saw in the store either said it had limited slip additives or it was safe for limited slips... even the lucas gear oil said safe for limited slip.

I would really like to know because I just spent a lot of $$$$ and time replacing worn out seals in my locker.

Any other thoughts from the mud collective?

This is what I use. Oil is out there without the additives just a little harder to find. I wouldn’t overthink it much as long as the oil you are using doesn’t have the lsd additives.

I am just going to call the arb tech guys Monday and ask them.

Lots of different opinions on the web. Some people say with arb's it is best to avoid lsd additives but say that lucas gear oil is fine. The lucas stuff apparently has friction modifiers but not necessarily any lsd additives.

Either way, I will do whatever arb recommends when I call them.

Well, this thread tosses a big a$$ wrench in my weekend project!
I bought the Nitro Synthetic Plus Gear lube because I'm using their gears. I ran out and read the bottle and it contains additives for LSD.
They sold me the ARB lockers and gears as a kit. Guess I'll call them Monday and see if I can use their wonder lube with the ARBs.

Dang it!
