Hello,

Recently acquired a 1977 FJ43. It was a very occasional driver for previous owner, but I was hoping to use it as a fun weekend driver and over greater distances. Have already replaced the carburetor, but now seeing rust in the bowl. Likely rust in the gas tank, but my tank (under the passenger seat) doesn't look anything like all the standard FJ40 tanks offered online. I know the FJ43's are quirky but do they have different gas tanks too? I could refurbish the existing one for about twice the cost of a new tank so just trying to see if I'm missing something. Thanks for the help.

What are the differences, unless you have a non oem tank or a long range replacement, all the under seat tanks are very similar with differences in vents & filler.

Way back in the mid 80's I had a seam start to weep on my 72. I did the alcohol proof fuel tank liner treatment from JC Whitney and it is still there and still working.

My tank's lines and connections are in different places. Perhaps my old tank is non-oem so that's the issue. Would have happened before I bought the truck and since this is my first one, I'm not familiar with the "regular" one. Just seeing if perhaps there were two options.

The under seat tanks have the same shape and as you noted the vents, & fill have differences based on year & model, some have vent lines running to center of vehicle because there was an evap set up that lived in the seat back vs on the tub side by filler. Dont know what year but the vent lines/evap also changed a bit as the emissions requirements did so early 70's & late 70's may have different vent/evap layouts & then add in the seat back evap and you see why there are multiple versions of the same tank.

what market was the 43 originally sold, can you post the model code? (will be something like, FJ43L-KJC). Most likely the 73-79 OEM tank will be your best option. I sell them or you can purchase from your local dealer.

Most of the tanks listed here were under seat tanks. As noted above by cruisermatt, your gas tank should fall in the 09/73 to 01/79 year range, with p/n 77100-60043.
